Pickoff Moves
Today's Birthdays
Steve Dunning CAL b. 1949, played 1976
Al McBean LAN b. 1938, played 1969-1970. A brilliant, rubber-armed reliever for the early 60's Pirates, Pittsburgh unsuccessfully tried him out as a starter in 1962 and 1968. He got his start in the majors while photographing a Pirates tryout camp, tried out himself, and got signed on the spot. The Padres signed him in the 1968 expansion draft, and then San Diego traded him to the Dodgers. The Dodgers released him in April, 1970; he re-signed with the Pirates, but was out of baseball a few games later.
Billy North LAN b. 1948, played 1978
Jimmy Wasdell BRO b. 1914, played 1940-1941, d. 1983-08-06. Sometimes players are valuable, not for who they are but for who they can get. Jimmy Wasdell was a solid bench player who could play a little outfield and some first base, but for the Dodgers, he was a piece needed to acquire the Hall of Fame shortstop Arky Vaughn. Ironically enough, Vaughn then only played for two years with the Dodgers before an irreconcilable feud with then-manager Leo Durocher led to a three-year self-imposed exile from baseball. After Durocher was suspended by baseball, Vaughn returned to play two years for the Dodgers. North played through 1947, retiring just one year before Vaughn retired from baseball; Fate retired Vaughn permanently when a fishing boat he was on capsized in 1952.
Answering The Call: Dodgers 6, Giants 3
Another one I missed thanks to attending the Angels game. Despite a blowup by OP, the Dodgers somehow hauled in a victory, mostly on the strength of the bats, though Jae Seo's strong six innings deserves mention, too. Judging by the way the Angels and Dodgers are playing right now, I'm predicting a series win for the Dodgers in Chavez Ravine over the weekend, the first time in a couple years I'd have said that.Roster Notes
- Jeff Weaver, loser of the game and his spot in the rotation? Brother Jered as a "long shot"?
- Jeff Mathis has a 10-game hitting streak going, but the Angels won't call him up until he's got a defined role — and the team doesn't want a repeat of its Josh Paul Experiment.
"The first thing is to get his game together," Scioscia said. "Until he can relax and play and can start to move in that direction, to consider him up here wouldn't make a lot of sense. But as he moves in that direction and plays well, he'll get a role up here because he's a heck of a player."
- Garret Anderson left the game Sunday with a strained hamstring.
- Dioner Navarro is about a week away from returning.
- The Rangers are likely to part ways with Erubiel Durazo. Durazo has a hamstring injury and is signed to a minor league contract.
- Eric Chavez is expected to return Tuesday from his bacterial infection.
- Both Frank Thomas and Milton Bradley will see their DL stretches extended. Thomas isn't running well, and Bradley is still feeling the effects of his oblique strain.
