Pickoff Moves
Today's Birthdays
Jose Guillen ANA b. 1976, played 2004. A temper tantrum in a batting helmet. Good riddance.
Carlos May CAL b. 1948, played 1977, All-Star: 1969,1972. If your contract data says "purchased by" in the free agent era, look out. Sure, May was a two-time all-star with the Chisox, but by the time the Angels got him, he was over. His career arc was almost certainly diminished when, as a Marine reserve at Camp Pendleton, a mortar blew off part of his right thumb.
Dick Smith LAN b. 1939, played 1965
Elmer Steele BRO b. 1886, played 1911, d. 1966-03-09
Rube Vickers BRO b. 1878, played 1903, d. 1958-12-09
Different, Yet Vaguely Familiar: Rockies 5, Dodgers 1
The Rockies have been surpassed in the standings by the Diamondbacks, but so far by only one game; Jeff Kent and Kenny Lofton left the game early, and this can't be a good thing.Roster Notes
- Eric Gagné will face live hitters soon, and after that will head to Las Vegas to make a rehab start.
- Though Cesar Izturis is nearing a return date with the big club, neither he nor Jeff Kent have been asked to move to third.
- The Dodgers won't send down Russ Martin when Dioner Navarro returns to the roster.
- Former Angel Aaron Sele will face former Dodger Jeff Weaver in Friday night's start. Heh.
- Jeff Weaver continues to meet with Mike Scioscia, Bud Black, and the catching staff to figure out what's gone wrong and what's gone right. The current thinking is that Weaver is overthrowing and missing high, rather than staying low and getting soft grounders. Well, I coulda told him that.
- Bartolo Colón will pitch against live hitters soon.
- Darin Erstad is eligible to come off the DL but "is not close to returning".
- Maicer Izturis will start taking ground balls.
- Garret Anderson sat out yesterday's game with plantar fasciitis, and may have to sit out this weekend's series at Dodger Stadium, where the DH is but a dream.
- The Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Rangers, and Angels are teams Ken Rosenthal listed as having interest in Dontrelle Willis.
