Today's Birthdays
Ken Boyer LAN b. 1931, played 1968-1969, All-Star: 1956, 1959-1964, d. 1982-09-07. A five-time Gold Glover at third base, he won the NL MVP award in 1964, a year in which the Cards went all the way. He collapsed in 1965 and played for a year with the Mets before they released him; the Dodgers picked him up as a free agent in 1968, but by then he was spent. He shared time at the hot corner with the unremarkable Bob Bailey and Bill Sudakis; it wasn't until 1973 that the Dodgers finally settled on Ron Cey at third, and that was only after a couple of years experimenting with Steve Garvey at the wrong end of the diamond.
The Dodgers released Boyer in 1969; he went on to a brief managerial career that included three seasons with the mediocre late 70's/early 80's Cardinals before dying in 1982.
Ralph Bryant LAN b. 1961, played 1985-1987
Bert Delmas BRO b. 1911, played 1933, d. 1979-12-04
Bob Giallombardo LAN b. 1937, played 1958
Joe Harris BRO b. 1891, played 1928, d. 1959-12-10
Jim Lyttle LAN b. 1946, played 1976
Tom Morgan LAA b. 1930, played 1961-1963, d. 1987-01-13. An original Angel, Tom Morgan — known as "The Plowboy" because of his stoop-shouldered walk, went 8-2 in relief for the 1961 Halos. Originally signed by the Yankees, he went from class A ball to the big club as a 21-year-old. The Yanks used him as a swingman; he would have been the first rookie starter in Yankees history to start a season opener save for a rainout in Washington. In addition to the Yankees and Angels, he played for the Kansas City A's, Tigers, and Twins. He was also a pitching coach for the Angels after his retirement.
Jeff Schwarz CAL b. 1964, played 1994
Harry Taylor BRO b. 1919, played 1946-1948, d. 2000-11-05
Jayson Werth LAN b. 1979, played 2004-2005. The forgotten Dodger on the 2006 squad, he languishes on the DL and wonders whether he will have a career. Good luck, Jayson.
