Excuse Me, I Have A Prior Engagement

Mark Prior is simply getting shelled in his first game back from the DL. He's given up three home runs and six earned runs in his first inning, recording all three before getting an out; after the last homer, a two-run shot to Chris Shelton, his season ERA was 162.00. To say something seems to be wrong with him is beside the point; he's only throwing fastballs. On top of this, it's raining in Chicago with an 8 MPH wind blowing straight out to center. What on earth — besides his last minor league rehab start, wherein he struck out ten AAA batters — possessed the Cubs' braintrust to think he was ready for the Show?

Update: Prior found his curveball in the second, and retired three of four Tigers he faced, though he hit Vance Wilson with a pitch.

Update 2: In the top of the fourth, Prior gives up another two-run homer to Vance Wilson, and the Wrigley crowd boos him mercilessly. Dusty Baker replaced Prior with Roberto Novoa, and Prior leaves the game with a 17.18 ERA on seven hits, a walk, and four home runs.

Update 3: The Cubs and Tigers just raised a bunch of money for prostate cancer research, as the Tigers whipped the Cubs 12-3, the two teams hitting eleven home runs between them.

Comments:
Eleven home runs, actually. Three for the Cubs, all solo, by Nevin, Rameriz, and Blanco. 8 for the Tigers, Granderson, Guillen, Shelton (2), Wilson, Thames, Inge (2).

Go Cubs pitchers! Way to raise money for prostate cancer!
