Minor League Scorebook
News
- Before I get started tonight, I should mention that one of Nick Gorneault's two dingers in last night's game was a grand slam.
- Dodger 10th-round draft pick Andy D'Alessio hit a key home run in the College World Series, giving the Clemson Tigers a 5-4 lead that sparked a collapse in the Georgia Tech bullpen. Clemson went on to win the game 8-4.
- With sackcloth and the clang of dolorous bells, the Rev notes without attribution the demotion of Jered Weaver to Salt Lake, and Colón's presumable promotion.
Scores
Willits, R: 1-3, 1 RBI, 4 BB
Murphy: 1-7, 4 K
Kendrick, H: 3-6, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Gorneault: 0-5, 1 BB, 2 K
Mathis, J: 3-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Pride: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Eylward: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Saunders: 8.0 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 7 K, 1 BB, 2.49 ERA
Rouwenhorst: (W, 3-4) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 4.71 ERA
Oh, joy, so now I get to go through Conflicted Emotions City as the Angels and Dodgers minor leaguers bash each other. Ha, ha, only serious, the Bees took the first game of the series in thirteen innings and what a protracted bashfest this was, with 28 hits between the two sides; Salt Lake took the early 1-0 lead in the fifth on a Reggie Willits RBI single, but that lead evarporated in the top of the seventh as Joe Saunders gave up a run on a James Loney double, an Eric Riggs sac bunt, and an Oscar Robles RBI single.
Las Vegas posted single runs in the next two innings, one on a wild pitch by Marcus Gwyn. Salt Lake came back for two runs in the bottom of the ninth, keyed by a bunt single by catcher Jeff Mathis, a Curtis Pride single, and a run-scoring error by Casey Smith.
Vegas went on to score two more in the top of the tenth off demoted starter Chris Bootcheck. Delwyn Young doubled, James Loney tripled him home, and then Eric Riggs singled Loney home. Salt Lake answered with a pair of their own off Kelly Wunsch; Wunch surrendered a single to Tommy Murphy, and then plunked Howie Kendrick. Lance Carter... well, somehow, the 51's decided that Carter needed to be in the game, and he promptly loaded the bases by walking Nick Gorneault. Jeff Mathis sac flied a run home, and Curtis Pride's RBI groundout tied the game.
Vegas had a frustrating 11th, compounded by a bunt pop double-play off the bat of Cesar Izturis. The Bees couldn't get any traction in their half, but then in the 12th, Delwyn Young blasted a leadoff homer; it was all the scoring the 51's got in that frame. But Salt Lake returned fire quickly: with Carter replaced by Tim Hamulack, Howie Kendrick doubled, and then Jeff Mathis singled him home. It was all the scoring they'd do in that inning: despite loading the bases with only one out, Eric Riggs ended the threat by grounding out into a 5-2-3 double play.
The winning run came in the bottom of the 13th, when Reggie Willits walked with one out. A passed ball later by late-innings replacement catcher Eric Langill, and Howie Kendrick hit a walkoff single. Phew.
A great night for Joe Saunders, Jeff Mathis, and Howie Kendrick, Kendrick now hitting .398. Saunders has given up more than three runs in only three contests so far this year. He's had four contests with seven or more strikeouts, including a complete game and three shutouts; ten of his starts this year have been quality starts, and he missed an eleventh by only a single out. There are at least ten teams in the majors that he'd be starting for right now.
Wood: 1-4, 1 K
Brown: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Del Chiaro: 1-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Rodland: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB
Rodriguez, R: 4.2 IP, 4 ER, 8 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 8.46 ERA
Edwards: (W, 6-2) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 4.97 ERA
Wow, two wins in three nights? And despite a start by girlie-hitting Brent Del Chiaro behind the dish? Wichita tied this one in the top of the ninth, but Aaron Peel hit a walkoff RBI single, in addition to a two-run homer in the 7th. Somehow, the Travs' bullpen, a thing of shreds and patches, held together to keep the game at least close, pretty good considering the mismatch in teams.
Rodriguez, S: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Arredondo: (L, 4-5), 7.0 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 8 K, 3 BB, 2.16 ERA
Technically a quality start, Arredondo uncorked a pair of wild pitches, both of which led to runs scoring by High Desert. Sean Rodriguez's homer provided half of Rancho's scoring.
Trumbo: 2-4, 2 2B, 2 K
Martinez: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Marek: 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 6 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 2.29 ERA
Howell: (BS, 2)(L, 1-5) (in relief), 0.2 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 5.19 ERA
Cruz Chavez: 1.1 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.69 ERA
Didjurgis: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 3.25 ERA
Well, lookie here: Mark Trumbo's starting to het with some regularity and power. Stephen Marek had a fine six-innings outing, but Chris Howell blew the game and gave up five runs, three earned.
Valdez: 2-7, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K
Young, D: 2-6, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Guzman: 1-4, 1 2B, 2 K
Loney: 3-6, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 RBI
Robles: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Duncan: 3-6
Houlton: 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 8 K, 3 BB, 5.38 ERA
Osoria: (BS, 2), 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 4.24 ERA
Wunsch: 0.0 IP, 2 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 8.31 ERA
Carter: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 0.95 ERA
Hamulack: (BS, 1)(L, 0-1) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 3 BB, 1.17 ERA
Houlton was almost as good as the Bees' Joe Saunders tonight. Lance Carter allowed both of his inherited runners to score, thus offloading his crappiness onto Kelly Wunsch. But really, there was a lot to like about this game (save for Izturis' lame-brained pop-bunt double play), even for the losing 51's.
Meadows: 2-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Cresse: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Abreu: 0-0, 1 BB
Thomas: 4.0 IP, 5 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 7.88 ERA
Hoorelbeke: (BS, 3)(L, 0-1) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 6 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 4 BB, 1.56 ERA
The Suns' winning streak comes to an end, and is now the second-longest in Southern League history.
Pedroza: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
Denker, T: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Mitchell: 3-4, 1 RBI
Apodaca: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Pfeiffer: (L, 1-1), 8.0 IP, 6 ER, 12 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 4.21 ERA
Seems like old times: the Rome Braves, at it again and pounding the Catfish.
