Minor League Scorebook
News
- Peoria locked up the Western Division crown in the Midwest League; the Kernels are presently in a four-way tie for fourth, at six and a half games back.
- I hadn't checked out when the Travs were mathematically eliminated from first-half postseason play, but they are now, as the Tulsa Drillers took the North Division today.
- Update: Thanks to the Rev for pointing out that the Angels have made Wednesday's rotation spot TBA. It won't mean a callup just yet, but it might be a shuffling of the rotation — or a trade.
Scores
2006-06-18: Las Vegas 5, Salt Lake 8 #
Willits, R: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 3 K
Murphy: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Kendrick, H: 3-5, 2 3B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K
Gorneault: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 K
Pride: 2-2, 1 2B, 2 BB
Mathis, J: 2-4, 1 K
Eylward: 0-4, 1 RBI
Smith, C: 2-3, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Weaver, Jer: 5.0 IP, 4 ER, 11 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 3 HR, 2.47 ERA
Heaverlo: (W, 2-2) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 5.56 ERA
Jered Weaver surrendered three homers and eleven hits while striking out only a pair in his first AAA outing after being demoted. His head is almost certainly not right, and one bad outing is hardly enough to judge him on. Still, I'm concerned about his mental toughness.

Jeff Heaverlo seems to have been demoted to the pen immediately upon Weaver's return, which is almost certainly a good thing, judging by the results, especially. Howie Kendrick had a pair of triples and a home run, driving in half of the Bees' attack; he's now hitting .399. Reggie Willits also homered in the victory, which marked a Bees sweep of Las Vegas at home.

Peel, A: 2-4, 2 2B
Wood: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Brown: 2-2, 1 2B, 1 BB
Aspito: 2-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI
Wilson: 1-2, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Pali: 1-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Gates: 1-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Day: 2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Hunter: (W, 2-6), 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 1 K, 4 BB, 1 HR, 6.86 ERA
The Travs, it would seem, have had enough of being beaten all the time, as Brandon Wood, Matt Pali, and David Gates all homered in this seven-inning game, part of an attack that included an 11-run second inning. Chris Hunter had his best game in what seems like forever; the game was a rehab stint for Kansas City reliever Mike MacDougal, who started the game with a 1-2-3 first.

Zimmermann: 1.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 9.42 ERA
Another seven-inning game, the second half of a doubleheader caused by yesterday's rainout. Bob Zimmermann needs to prove himself this year, and so far he's just not doing it. Brandon Wood got on base twice in the game, and Mike Porter and Devin Day both homered. Jesse Smith didn't survive the third, and gave up six runs, four earned.

Simard: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 8.53 ERA
Micah Posey is looking like he's not gonna make it to AA next year. Sean Rodriguez collected a golden sombrero. A whole lotta offense here, just not enough for a win.

Hill: (L, 1-4) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 3.00 ERA
So much for Mark Trumbo's hitting streak. Jordan Renz's solo homer accounted for half of the scoring; a solid performance by Tommy Mendoza, but the bullpen fell apart for him.

Carrara: 0.1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 4.12 ERA
Joel Hanrahan didn't do too badly considering this was his maiden AAA voyage, and he was facing a pretty high-wattage offense in Salt Lake. Kelly Wunsch completely blew up and ended up getting hammered by Howie Kendrick, among others. James Loney, Eric Riggs, and Delwyn Young all homered in the loss.

Nice to see another win by the Catfish. Travis Denker did nothing at the plate, and the Fish rested Ivan De Jesus.

Comments:
At this point, Bill Stoneman better be trying to figure out someway to get Adam Kennedy traded. Kendrick might have stumbled in his initial, irregular at-bats, but what's the point of him being in AAA at this point? It doesn't look like there's anything more he can learn at SLC (except defense, perhaps). Whether he hits .400 or "just" .385, at this point doesn't really matter. He's doing what he's done everywhere he's been. It is established without a doubt that he can hit the crap out of minor league pitching. Can he do the same in the majors? Time to find out. Now.
As for Jered, he'll be back soon enough...either when his brother gets traded or Colon returns to the DL.
The worst part about today's game for Bart was that it was inconclusive. The radar on TV had him consistently hiting 93-94, which is pretty good. He only gave up 2 ER, which was also good. But it was the Padres, & the fact of the matter is that errors or no, SD still did get enough hits against him to get those runs in. We'd all be much better off if he'd either (a) been dominant, or (b) been awful.
Hey Rob: where would I find (if anywhere) the Quakes' projected starting rotation this week? If my calculations are correct, Arredondo takes the mound Wednesday, and I was considering making the trek out to Rancho.

I discovered that Mike Emeigh at BTF's Notes In A Minor Key has the day's probables, but not beyond that. Pretty much what I end up doing is to go to the MILB.com sites for the teams and work backwards. Based thereupon and judging by my own recollection of their relative abilities, it seems to me that the rotation is currently going
Jose Arredondo
Fernando Rodriguez
Micah Posey
Amalio Diaz
Francisco Rodriguez
We're on Posey at the moment, which means Arredondo on Wednesday, ayup. Rancho is one heck of a drive... now, if it were Adenhart, I might be more tempted to go.
