Pickoff Moves, Late Edition

Administrivia: Movin' Time

Because Blogger continues to have ongoing reliability issues, I finally purchased services at a different hosting provider. 6-4-2 will continue to publish out of Blogspot for a while longer, but I'm going to move everything to a new domain, to be announced presently.

Longoria Signs, Other Draft Notes

Roster Notes For Veterans

Comments:
I don't think the Angels need to make big splashes in the draft right now. With their collection of solid players in the minors ready to be called up, it makes sense to pick the high risk/high upside guys. I mean, who cares if they get 50 more mediocre minor league players. Heck, if an individual draft doesn't have a single player that can make the majors right now, it is not going to affect their team in the long run. But if they can steal a potentially spectacular player, it can pay off huge. I can see this strategy with picking Jered Weaver (who had signability issues), Nick Adenhart (who had injury issues) and I can see it with Hank Conger, Page, Fuller, and Herndon. There are too many picks that never do anything (including first round picks) to worry about if a guy is slightly more likely to make the majors. This is especially true with how the Angels' system is loaded with potentially spectacular players.

But... outside of Conger, I don't see many of those sorts of risk/reward type guys.

Two risk/reward types for the Angels would be Nathan Boman, left-handed pitcher, who had shoulder surgery during his sophmore year and didn't play during his junior year; and Jordan Walden, right-handed pitcher, who was one of the top-rated high school pitchers before suffering a groin injury during his senior year (and who has a full-ride scholarship offer from UT).

This year's draft wasn't stacked with talent, plus the Angels didn't have a lot of high-level draft picks, so there really wasn't much they could do.

They got Conger and some dark horses ... that's about all you could expect.
