Pickoff Moves
Today's Birthdays
Jackie Collum LAN,BRO b. 1927, played 1957-1958. What happens when the first game you pitch in the majors is a shutout? Does it wreck you afterwards? It didn't seem to for Collum, who shut down the Cubs 6-0. He was an afterthought when the Dodgers gave him up for Don Elston, but Elston went on to a well-deserved 1959 All-Star berth with the Cubs, a terrible trade for the Dodgers.
Randy Moore BRO b. 1906, played 1936-1937, d. 1992-06-12
Rick Sutcliffe LAN b. 1956, played 1976, 1978-1981, All-Star: 1983, 1987, 1989. A former Padres announcer, too, in his playing days he stumbled from the Dodgers' rotation to the bullpen. Traded to Cleveland, he had a brilliant first season there, but pined for a job on a contending team, so off he went to Chicago. Once at Wrigley in 1984, he again had an outstanding season, and in so doing became the first Cy Young winner ever who split a season between leagues (he won the NL award). His last good season for the Cubs was 1987, though he lingered on through 1991; two years with the Orioles and a third with the Cards later, he was out of baseball.
Roster Notes
- The probability of a Howie Kendrick recall seems to be increasing exponentially, although they're once again talking about moving him over to third base, and McPherson back to first, with what-aren't-you-doing-for-me-lately, odd-man-out Kendry Morales getting days off or an outright demotion. Of course, Mickey Hatcher has this not very encouraging thing to say to the press:
"The last thing we want is for these kids to go 0 for 20 or three for 30, but sometimes that's what you deal with when you have young kids," batting instructor Mickey Hatcher said.
"They're in there thinking that any day they could get sent down, and putting more pressure on themselves. The biggest thing we can do is keep their confidence up."
Which of course is why you tell the press the team might demote non-producers like Morales.Update: Happy? - Darin Erstad may revisit the DL, with Tommy Murphy getting the callup. C'mon, let's face facts: he needs surgery, but he won't accept that.
- Nick Gorneault won't be an option for anything — he broke his patella on Monday when he fouled a ball off his knee and will miss a month.
- Jose Molina may lose playing time incentives thanks to the emergence of Mike Napoli.
