Pickoff Moves

OT: Wrong Drugs

Man, it really takes a while to collect your thoughts... I took the wrong meds before going to bed yesterday and was up all night, and even then it took me a while to condense everything I wanted to say in my first real post at LAist today. Is it incoherent? Ah, that's why.

Today's (Late) Birthdays

Faye Throneberry LAA b. 1931, played 1961, d. 1999-04-26

Esteban Yan LAA b. 1975, played 2005. An answer to the unwanted question, "How does a man have a 6.19 ERA and stay in the majors?" Bill Stoneman's magic just ran out, and there he was for a year and change. He actually didn't do too badly with the Reds — at first — surrendering only a single run over four innings. Also an answer to in the "Jeopardy" category, Après moi, le deluge.

Angels Braintrust Meets

Do not believe this story has any significance. It is 100% public relations.

This Title Does Not Use The Words "Motivated", "Beltre", Or "Izturis": Dodgers 4, Mariners 2

The M's must have surely figured they had this one aced, what with the appearance of creamy, crunchewy Brett Tomko on the mound. Tomko, who hasn't had a win in over a month (May 15), ended up whacking himself with a foul ball in batting practice, another reason pitchers shouldn't hit. But in this case, I'll strongly endorse Tomko's time in the cage, and offer him extras, gratis, if that's what it takes to keep him off the mound. Derek Lowe filled in; he's hardly my favorite pitcher in the world but he does represent a marked improvement over at least two of the guys in the rotation, and three depending on how you feel about Chad Billingsley at this stage of his development.

The Dodgers just pecked Felix Hernandez to death with a barrage of eleven singles. While the M's wannabe ace at times looked brilliant, those singles eventually battered him into a 4-2 loss, giving up three of the four in the sixth before getting the hook. The kid does seem to be learning, and frankly, he scares me. I'm just grateful the Dodgers were able to get out of it with a win; Grady Little refused to pull the plug on Derek Lowe, and Lowe somehow got through it with a complete game victory, his first of the year.

Finally, Cesar Izturis apparently intended that we pay attention to him instead of the ridiculously slumping Rafael Furcal currently infesting the shortstop position. Izzy went 3-4 and scored a couple runs; he'll probably be traded for middle relief before the deadline, but it's good to see the little guy back.
