Today's Birthdays

Babe Herman BRO b. 1903, played 1926-1931, 1945, d. 1987-11-27. He just missed being a Hall of Famer by a last name, but he was a fine player in his own right. His 1930 season, in which he batted .393, still stands as a Dodger record for average; he also holds franchise records for single-season total bases (416), hits (241), and runs scored (143). He's also one of only two players to hit for the cycle three times. He was also infamous for his inattentive fielding, and rumors persisted of his getting hit on the head by flyballs. Traded to Cincinnati in 1932, he spent six more mostly productive years before retiring, though he did have a one-year comeback with the 1945 Dodgers as a graybeard wartime player in an era when the majors had trouble fielding teams at all.

Rodney Myers LAN b. 1969, played 2003-2004

Jean-Pierre Roy BRO b. 1920, played 1946

Henry Schmidt BRO b. 1873, played 1903, d. 1926-04-23
