Gagné Has Herniated Disc, May Need Back Surgery

Eric Gagné has a herniated disc in his back and may need immediate back surgery if the epidural given him today does not work.
[Dodgers trainer Stan] Johnston said the injury is similar to that suffered by Dodgers pitcher Kevin Brown in May 2002, ironically when Brown was rehabbing from a second season of elbow miseries, as is Gagne.

Brown had surgery in June of that year, rushed his return to be pitching two months later, but his back was never right and he had to shut it down in September. Brown was plagued thereafter by back problems that led to his recent retirement.
