Minor League Scorebook
News
- From today's Futures chat at Baseball America (the writer is BA's Chris Kline):
Q: Marty Rafter from Schweinfurt, Germany asks:
Dodgers LHP Scott Elbert has put up some great numbers on what seems to be a pretty weak Vero Beach team in the High Class A Florida State league, yet he didn't get selected for the FSL All Star Game, or the Futures Game. Are there simply that many pitching prospects out there that are better than him, or has he not been the dominant, ace LHP in person that the numbers on paper would make it seem? Thanks!!A: Chris Kline: Germany Represent! Sorry about the World Cup, dude. I had Spain in our in-house bracket--yeah that's right--a World Cup bracket . . . so I'm out too. Anyway, Marty, setting the Futures Game rosters is a little tougher than most people probably realize. In Elbert's case, it didn't come down to him versus other pitching prospects, but other Dodgers. And for me, there are few arms I'd take over Elbert on the U.S. staff--starting with Homer Bailey.
Q: Charles Berg from Houston, Texas asks:
Jose Arredondo had a great AA start last night. What are your thoughts on his season so far? Is he the best Angels pitching prospect? Is he an elite arm?A: Chris Kline: Arrendondo also had the best fastball in the Cal-Carolina all-star game, touching 97 several times in his one inning of work. The fastball has a tendency to flatten out at times, which leads to guys turning that around on him. I don't know if I'd say elite arm just yet, but he's been impressive. I'd just like to see more out of his offspeed stuff. Adenhart is the Angels best pitching prospect.
- Here's an article about recent Travs convert Terry Evans. Excerpt:
"Out of nowhere, I guess," Evans said [about his sudden offensive surge this year]. "I really haven't changed anything in my approach physically, it's more about being calm and relaxed and my faith in God has really allowed me to do that. I know you get a lot of athletes saying similar things, but it was like turning a switch. There isn't pressure anymore and that's the best feeling in the world.
And get this: his BABIP is .258 but his regular average is .310, which means he could get even better if things average out. According to the Times, Evans will be the regular centerfielder for AA Arkansas."I know people probably get tired about athletes thanking God for their successes, but in my case it's absolutely true. I don't have that frustration anymore when I go 0-for-4. I just move on to the next day and I'm not pressing like I used to when things weren't going well."
- Thanks to ssjames in today's DT thread on the NL for pointing out the big change on the Jacksonville roster, the promotion of starter Scott Elbert from Vero Beach. Also, Ricky Ledee starts his rehab assignment with the Suns starting tomorrow.

Okay, so Saunders didn't strike anybody out, it was still a good outing. Too bad the Bees didn't get a win out of it.
Wood: 1-4, 1 BB
Brown: 1-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB
Porter: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 K

Back to Jesse Smith and his raging mediocrity. If Miguel Gonzalez could have pitched a scoreless ninth, the Travs would have won, but nope. Adam Keim's three-run dinger carried the day after Gonzalez walked a pair in front of Wichita's number eight hitter. Some days, you're the bug.
Rodriguez, S: 0-5, 2 K

Simard: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 0.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 6.92 ERA
For future reference, Michael Simard is not a better pitcher than Kevin Lynch. Simard gave up a walkoff sac fly in the bottom of the ninth.

Mendoza: (W, 6-5), 7.2 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 4.11 ERA

Update: Wilkin Ruan had a leadoff triple in the 14th and scored the game winning run. It was the longest game in Beavers history.

I will start the cry for LaRoche to be brought up to the majors. I just got back from the marathon 51s road win over the Portland Beavers (3-2, 14 innings) a few minutes ago. Some first hand observations:
LaRoche absolutely crushed a fastball for a line-drive homerun to left. If there wasn't a wall behind the fence, that ball was still elevating and would have gone a long, long way.
Loney hit the ball hard in 4 ABs: 2 singles, lined into a DP at 1B, and ripped a one-hopper to 2B for another DP. He also walked and grounded out. Loney also leaped up an robbed Termel Sledge of a homerun, snowconing the catch. It was a highlight reel play. Since when is Loney in LF and Joel Guzman at 1B? By contrast, Joel Guzman didn't look that impressive. 0-6, BB, K. His K in the 14th was very weak, swinging at a pitch around his eyes. I think he only hit one ball hard for an out. D. Young struck out 3 times and flew out to center, then left on a double switch.
Osoria and Carter each gave up HRs late to ruin an excellent start by Justin Reid. I hadn't really heard of Reid, but he was making the Beaver hitters shake their heads in disgust.
The game finally ended when the Beavers made their 4th error of the game, allowing the speedy Wilkin Ruan to score. Luis Gonazalez pitched the 13th and 14th for the win.

16 heh i figured loney robbed a homerun. on gameday, it showed the ball being caught behind the fence. Did his outfield defense look okay?
Did laroche's defense look okay as well? Could you tell if he was favoring his shoulder at all? I'm just concerned hes going to re-injure it.

18-Nate, Loney's catch last night was incredible, but other than that, the outfield defense of the 51s wasn't really tested. The Beavers only managed to hit a handful of singles and their flyouts weren't really challenging. Ruan is very speedy. He hit a triple in the late innings were he slowed up and rounded the bag as the ball was just getting to the cutoff in shallow center. I could see him as a September callup, pinch-run specialist.
I knew LaRoche's shoulder was giving him trouble before the game, but anyone just watching him wouldn't have noticed him favoring it. I think I saw a tug at his shirt on a swing and miss once.
Another side note, I sat near an older couple who were Beaver fans and carefully keeping their scorebooks. They had been to the game on the 5th as well and whenever Loney came up they were nervously mumbling to each other: "this guy's their best hitter."
