Minor League Scorebook
News
- Well, it's about freakin' time somebody did something about the quality of the player pages at MILB.com, which for the longest time weren't half of what was available for the major league players. Looking at Casey Smith's page, you can see that they now give his date of birth (you used to have to go to the team roster pages for that) and all that biographical info (college, height, weight, handedness), the teams he's played for this year, last ten games, and — horrors! — his splits, including grass/Astroturf, day games, night games, pre/post-All-Star, ahead/behind in the count, and a bunch of other stuff. It's exactly what I think we've been hoping for for some time. Hopefully some of us have prodded these guys into improving their product; just so, and hurrah. It's still missing data from before 2005, though.
- Here's a Baseball America story about Westlake Village catcher Robert Stock jumping from high school to play at USC as a 16-year-old; he will be draft-eligible as a college player at the jaw-dropping age of 19. He had to get an NCAA waiver to attend USC, which he no doubt got on the strength of a 1410 SAT score; he has enrolled through the school's Resident Honors Program, which admits about 30 "elite students who have demonstrated exceptional maturity to enroll in the university a year early." He plans to both catch and pitch.
- Aruba dropped out of the Olympic qualifying tournament, leaving Team USA without a third opponent. The team will now head for Cuba.

Bootcheck: (L, 4-3) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 6.75 ERA
Dan Davidson actually posted an almost-respectable game for the Bees, going five innings and giving up four runs, but Chris Bootcheck coughed up the go-ahead runs. Dallas McPherson returned to the lineup to let us know he's still alive, and actually got a couple hits for his trouble. Go him. Jeff Mathis and Cory Smith both had 3-5 nights, Mathis's more impressive for his triple.

The Travs lost this one in the bottom of the tenth after plating the go-ahead run in the top of the frame; Bill Edwards gave up a walkoff two-run shot to Royals top prospect Alex Gordon. Zach Greinke pitched eight frames and surrendered nine hits and got three strikeouts. Matt Brown and Brent Del Chiaro homered in the loss; Jesse Smith got better than a quality start.

Cruz Chavez: (W, 2-0) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 6.00 ERA
Fernando Rodriguez's best game since his last start. Okay, I should give him props for having three straight quality-or-better starts, and getting wins in two of them, and being denied in this one because the offense came under another pitcher's watch; Josh Leblanc plated Hainley Statia on an RBI single in the top of the ninth.

Didjurgis: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 4.66 ERA
Man, how depressing must it be to be Mark Trumbo these days? Brok Butcher didn't pitch terribly but lost anyway. Marco Albano's solo homer was the only run scored for the Kernels. Update: and, oh yes, Yohan Pino set down the first 16 Kernels he pitched to, striking out seven without issuing a walk.

Incinelli: (BS, 1)(W, 2-2) (in relief), 0.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 3.77 ERA
Sean O'Sullivan continues to make outs, and I just have to think his ceiling is somewhere around AA; guys just don't have decent careers who strike out as few guys as he does. P.J. Phillips blasted a pair over the fence in the win.

The 16-6 Angels are on top of the league, and it's outings like this one by Tim Schoeninger that partly explain why. Schoeninger's still only walked three all season (that's 62.1 IP so far). Warner Madrigal had another scoreless frame.
