Today's Birthdays
Wes Flowers BRO b. 1913, played 1940, 1944, d. 1988-12-31
Mudcat Grant LAN b. 1935, played 1968, All-Star: 1963, 1965. You can't run into a bio of this guy without the word "colorful" showing up somewhere; he pitched some of his best baseball as an older player. The first black man to win a World Series game (Game 1 of the 1965 series) after leading the AL in wins and winning percentage (21-7, .750), he eventually ended up in a Dodgers uniform for a year in 1968 for a 78-86 team, used almost exclusively in relief; Grant was out of baseball after the 1971 season.
Fielder Jones BRO b. 1871, played 1896-1900, d. 1934-03-13
Tom Niedenfuer LAN b. 1959, played 1981-1987. A postseason hero who tossed five scoreless frames in the 1981 World Series as a rookie, he became the goat when he gave up a solo homer to Ozzie Smith in the and a three-run jack to Jack Clark in the 1985 NLCS, thus leading to much hilarity.
Dennis Powell LAN b. 1963, played 1985-1986
Tom Prince LAN b. 1964, played 1994-1998
Jarrod Washburn ANA,LAA b. 1974, played 1998-2005. Top 100 Angel Washburn was never all that at home, a fact that persistently annoyed me; it doesn't bother me much to see him in a Mariners uniform, unless they beat the Angels.
Kemp Wicker BRO b. 1906, played 1941, d. 1973-06-11
