Minor League Scorebook
News
I have a bunch of catch-up to work on from Minor League Ball:- A decidedly pessimistic Ervin Santana crystal ball that projects him to be a 3-4 starter with significant injury problems.
- A Vlad Guerrero prospect retrospective.
- Since he'll end up in the same league and division as his brother, I'll include this Stephen Drew crystal ball that projects him as — surprise! — an injury-plagued, infield version of his brother, who will eventually end up at third rather than short.
- "I really have no idea what to expect" of Wilson Betemit.
- John Sickels likes (and likens) Nick Adenhart.
- In non-Sickelian news, Mike Emeigh suggests the Dodgers are unhappy with Las Vegas and that park's effects on their young pitchers. Maybe they need a humidor...
- Emeigh also makes this interesting point:
It does seem to me that teams are becoming less willing to give up even a remotely useful prospect — let alone a top prospect — for trading deadline help. Sure, there were some good prospects traded — Joel Guzman, Nelson Cruz, Ryan Shealy, Garrett Mock — but none of those players are likely to turn into a Scott Kazmir or Jason Bay (and I should point out that Kazmir and Bay are exceptions in recent seasons — not the rule). Much has been made of Bill Stoneman's tendency to hold onto his prospects rather than making deals for them, but Stoneman is not unusual among major league GMs these days [emphasis mine].
To the extent that it has become extremely difficult to pry good prospects loose from the current organizations, I think that it makes the typical argument used to defend bad organizations which sign fading veterans (not pointing fingers at anyone, David Littlefield) even less defensible. There may be a thought that "hey, we can flip Burnitz/Casey/Randa for prospects at the deadline", but recent events have demonstrated that the "thought" is, more likely, a pipe dream. Teams rarely make those types of deals any more.

Somebody mentioned the absence of Kendry Morales from the Salt Lake lineup over the last couple days, and I agree it's concerning; if he doesn't show up by Sunday, I'll do some more investigation.
Back to this game. Dallas has two jacks, one of which was a two-run shot in the fifth; he got lifted in the eighth for a pinch hitter when the Sky Sox brought in lefty and former Dodger Steve Colyer. Nick Gorneault had a perfect night at the plate, though he did help out the Colorado Springs offense when he booted the ball. Jeff Mathis drove in a trio of runners.
And Steven ... did not get shelled!
Evans: 0-3
Porter: 2-4, 1 2B
Wilson: 0-4
Rodland: 0-2, 2 BB
Hunter: (L, 3-11), 6.2 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 7 H, 5 K, 4 BB, 6.59 ERA
Brandon Wood's RBI came on a sac fly.
Collins: 2-4, 3 RBI, 1 BB
Johnson: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Leblanc: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K

Torres: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 8.27 ERA
Fernando Rodriguez posted his first quality start since July 17. Sean Rodriguez and Josh Leblanc both homered in this rout of High Desert. The Quakes put together a seven-run sixth inning rally, all on two outs. Four errors by the Mavericks resulted in only one unearned run.
Statia: 1-5, 1 RBI, 2 K
Renz: 2-4, 3 RBI, 1 BB
Morris: 2-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Trumbo: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Mendoza: (W, 9-6), 7.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 9 H, 6 K, 0 BB, 2 HR, 4.30 ERA
Tommy Mendoza put up his second consecutive quality start, and his fourth in seven games as the Kernels jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first on the strength of Dallas Morris and Mark Trumbo homers. The team led the rest of the way; the Timber Rattlers went through seven pitchers, none of whom pitched more than an inning and two thirds.
Pettit: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K
Phillips: 0-3
Cassevah: 4.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 4.28 ERA
Pellegrine: (BS, 1)(W, 1-0) (in relief), 0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.23 ERA
Christopher Pettit's two-run jack in the bottom of the eighth pushed Orem over the top after the Chukars tied it up in the top of that frame.
Moore: 2-3, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Jimenez: (L, 3-3), 4.0 IP, 8 R, 8 ER, 9 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 4.32 ERA
Brandt: 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 6.14 ERA
Esmerlin Jimenez didn't look much like Merlin on this, giving up all eight runs over four innings, including a pair of jacks that scored five.
Kemp: 2-4, 1 3B
LaRoche: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Young, D: 1-4, 1 K
Robles: 1-4
Kuo: 1-3, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 K
Kuo: (W, 3-3), 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 3.57 ERA
A solid win highlighted by Hong-Chih Kuo's grand slam, who also pitched a quality start to pick up his third win so far this year, and only his second as a starter. It was Kuo's longest single outing of the year; the homer was Kuo's first in the minors. Sergio Garcia also homered.
Raglani: 0-2, 1 K
Abreu: 0-1
Dewitt: 1-1
Muegge: 3.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 3.91 ERA

Mitchell: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Dunlap: 1-3, 1 2B
Gonzalez: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Hoffmann: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Arias, M: 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 7 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 1.00 ERA
Wilson: (BS, 3)(L, 2-6) (in relief), 0.2 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 3.62 ERA
Dodger reliever Kyle Wilson failed to stop a four-run Mets rally in the eighth, robbing Marlon Arias of a win.
Denker, T: 1-2, 1 RBI
Godwin: 2-2, 1 2B
Castillo: (W, 7-4), 5.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 4.74 ERA
Travis Denker's fifth inning sac fly was enough to put the Catfish in the win column. Arismendy Castillo came within an out of a quality start.
A short in an underground power main caused this second game to be postponed until today, as backup light towers were deemed inadequate to the task. The game will have an early start at 2:00 PM EDT.
Castillo, J: 6.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 2.70 ERA
Sanfler: (W, 2-1) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.61 ERA
The Raptors turned a three-run deficit around into a one-run advantage in the bottom of the eighth, partly on Carlos Santana's three-run jack; the other run scored on a wild pitch from Daniel Hanna.
Robinson: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Mattingly: 2-4, 1 3B, 1 RBI
Jansen: 1-2, 1 2B, 2 BB
Melgarejo: (W, 3-1), 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 4.11 ERA
Smit: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 4.09 ERA
Thomas Melgarejo pitched a strong six innings; Elian Herrera went 3-4, as if he needed to do anything more to improve his already strong (.341) batting average.
