Another Bad Call: Blue Jays 2, Angels 1

The Angels have had some bad calls, like all teams, and as we learned in last year's postseason, complaining about them only gets the opposition's rabble to visit your blog and leave untidy droppings all over the comments, like an ox with dysentery. Still, it's possible to gripe about the called third strike to GA in the bottom of the eighth; there was just no way that pitch, inside by about a foot, bent back in time to be over any part of the plate.

But as with last year's postseason, they damned well need to hit, and especially so when Oakland loses 9-6 to the Devil Rays, this despite getting plenty of run support, including Frank Thomas homering in his fifth consecutive game. While I admire Scioscia's pluck in apparently deciding to further rejigger the lineup and put Orlando Cabrera at the top of the order, given Howie Kendrick's late slump, having him bat second wasn't such a hot idea. Sure enough, he hit into his second double play in as many days. This club needs power bats in the corner infield, and what they have instead is a second baseman playing out of position, and a utilityman with a sub-.500 SLG at third. The basic problems of the 2005 squad remain unsolved in the club's current configuration; we await a healthy season, if such a thing exists, from Casey Kotchman, and a real, non-Dallas McPherson solution at third. It took me all the effort I had to keep from drooling at the sight of Troy Glaus.
