Today's Birthdays

Dave Clark LAN b. 1962, played 1996

Lindsay Deal BRO b. 1911, played 1939, d. 1979-04-18

Bill Gilbreth CAL b. 1947, played 1974

Rene Gonzales CAL b. 1960, played 1992-1993, 1995

Ed Konetchy BRO b. 1885, played 1919-1921, d. 1947-05-27. An amazingly durable first baseman who twice led the league in games played, and once played all 26 innings of a Robins/Braves game. He had a Garret Anderson sort of career: a solid regular who probably would have been an All-Star if he had played in the post-1933 era, but not really good enough to be in the Hall.

Morrie Martin BRO b. 1922, played 1949

Eddie Stanky BRO b. 1916, played 1944-1947, All-Star: 1947-1948, 1950, d. 1999-06-16. Led the league three times in walks, twice in OBP, and once each in runs scored, hit-by-pitches, sac flies, and times on base, he remains tied in sixth place (with Jackie Robinson) for highest franchise OBP. He played second until 1948, when Robinson took his job; in Robinson's rookie year of 1947, the Dodgers played him at first as a means to keep Stanky at second. Stanky, who bluntly told Robinson he did not like playing with him, was traded before the start of the 1948 season, along with several others who had made their feelings known to management. His cantankerous nature inspired Leo Durocher's incorrectly remembered quip, "nice guys finish last". Stanky managed the 1977 Texas Rangers to a perfect 1-0 record for one day after heading the Cardinals and White Sox over seven seasons in two different decades.

Jake Woods LAA b. 1981, played 2005. Now toiling for the Mariners.
