Today's Birthdays

Don Aase CAL,LAN b. 1954, played 1978-1982, 1984, 1990, All-Star: 1986. A Top 100 Angel and the winner of Game 3 of the 1979 ALCS, the only postseason game the Angels won in their history at the time, and the only one they would win until the 1982 ALCS in which the Angels melted down on the road and couldn't clinch in three tries. Arm injuries eventually took him away from starting, and he became an effective middle reliever for the weak Orioles teams of the late 1980's; he retired after stints with the Mets and Dodgers in 1989 and 1990.

Ken Forsch CAL b. 1946, played 1981-1984, 1986, All-Star: 1976, 1981. Another Top 100 Angel, Forsch and brother Bob are the only siblings in major league history to collect no-hitters. Led the league at various times in shutouts, WHIP, and hit batters; was in the top 10 for ERA four times. The Angels traded shortstop Dickie Thon in April 1981 to get him, thanks to a motivating injury to starter Dave Frost. Thon went on to be a mainstay of the Astros for most of the decade, and while Forsch can hardly be declared a bust, he gave the Angels really only one good season and one mediocre one; over his last two years with the Angels (the last two of his career, with separate injuries to his shoulder and elbow), Forsch only pitched 23.1 innings.

Val Picinich BRO b. 1896, played 1929-1933, d. 1942-12-05. A backup catcher who caught three no-hitters for three different clubs, the A's, Senators, and Red Sox; three other Dodgers have caught three no-hitters: Roy Campanella, Charles Johnson, and Jeff Torborg.

Comments:
What I've always liked about Aase was that, through the years, his name always seemed to come up first when I opened up the Baseball Encyclopedia or other baseball reference books.

Aase was alphabetically surpassed in the all-time roster this year by David Aardsma.
