And In Other News...
- Former major league pitcher Joe Niekro died at the age of 61; of a brain aneurysm. He is the Houston Astros' career franchise leader in wins (with 144), and in the top ten for a number of other single-season and career marks. He is survived by his brother, Hall of Famer Phil Niekro, and his son, Giants first baseman Lance Niekro. He beat the Dodgers in a one-game playoff in 1980 for the NL West crown.
- Buddy Black could be the leading candidate to replace Bruce Bochy in San Diego. Black owns a home in Rancho Santa Fe, just north of San Diego.
- Barry Bonds will file for free agency "as soon as possible" barring a contract offer from the Giants. No such offer has been forthcoming, and the first day Bonds can file for free agency is ... tomorrow, the day after the World Series is over. Under the new CBA, the Giants don't have to offer arbitration to Bonds by December 7 in order to get free agent compensation. Supposedly, the Angels and Dodgers will end up as bargaining chips for his negotiations with the Giants, but, um, no.
