Pickoff Moves, Lunchtime Edition

Today's Birthdays

Carlos Garcia ANA b. 1967, played 1998, All-Star: 1994. A "we hadda send somebody" All-Star with Pittsburgh, he spelled Justin Baughman at second with the 1998 Angels. Baughman himself was a stopgap at that position until Adam Kennedy came along, as was Baughman's replacement, Randy Velarde.

John Karst BRO b. 1893, played 1915, d. 1976-05-21

Nick Tremark BRO b. 1912, played 1934-1936, d. 2000-09-07

So, What Is That Caterpillar Under Spiezio's Lower Lip Called?

Clearly it's not a goatee — that requires a moustache. And Wikipedia disagrees with him on whether it should be called an "imperial", a beardlet that includes a moustache. I'm more inclined to call it a royale, though the Francophone impériale seems applicable, too. As one BTF wag put it, "I think it's adorable how all those women in St. Louis have dyed their facial hair red."

More On The Tigers' Advance

Here's a sweet story about the Tigers clinching:
My 5 year old son is a huge Tiger fan. We’d been watching the game Saturday night and he’d wandered into the other room to help his sister with something after Oakland’s half of the 9th. When Craig Monroe and Placido Polanco both singled bringing up Magglio Ordonez (that’s his Tiger) I called to him. He came into the room and I said to him, “I think you might want to be watching right now.”

I reset the situation and he said, “this is kind of scary.” By scary I think he meant nerve-wracking, but he’s 5 and I figured it was close enough and simply agreed.

A's fans are understandably disappointed and resigned but looking forward to 2007:
The A's have several players who are key to the A's chances to repeat as division champions in 2007, but whose futures with the A's are uncertain because they are either free agents or are arbitration eligible: Frank Thomas, Milton Bradley, and Justin Duchscherer were three of the most crucial elements to the A's success in 2006. What do they all have in common? Their health is a total question mark. How much do the A's invest in them for 2007, or for the long-term deals they may require in order to be locked up for 2007? Decisions about these three players may be Billy Beane's defining calls for the 2007-2009 era. I can't see the A's being as good as the Angels without all three of them, but I also can't see spending substantial money on them only to watch them wither away for half a season on the "not available list". This is where I appreciate the fact that Beane is less more detached than I am when it comes to personnel decisions.
Well, 2007 can't come soon enough, baseball-wise, anyway.
