Pickoff Moves
More Baseball America League Talent Rankings
This time for the Cal League, with Nick Adenhart, Jose Arredondo, and Sean Rodriguez making the top 20; in the Florida State League, Scott Elbert and Blake DeWitt both made that league's top 20.Dodgers Farm Director Leaves For Japan, Other Minor League Notes
- Dodgers farm director Terry Collins has left the Dodgers to manage in Japan, with the Orix Buffaloes.
- Scott Elbert will not pitch in the AFL, as the Dodgers are shutting him down due to fatigue from pitching 146 innings. He will be replaced by Jonathan Meloan.
- First-round draft pick RHP Bryan Morris will undergo Tommy John surgery after injuring himself pitching for Orem. He will miss all of next season.
- Converted outfielder Warner Madrigal is learning how to throw a slider and splitter in Arizona Instructional League games; he'll likely play winter league ball in the Dominican and will make a showing at spring training in 2007 to determine his disposition.
- The International League will cease to live up to its name after 2007, when the Ottawa franchise packs up.
Angel Upgrades
Stuff we'll hear a lot more about in the coming days, courtesy of the Daily News:- Casey Kotchman should stick as a first baseman with an undistinguished class coming up in free agency, including Nomar Garciaparra, Sean Casey, Doug Mientkiewicz, Phil Nevin and Shea Hillenbrand.
- For the first time, we read the name Mark Teahen from the Royals as a possibility at third base, as is Joe Crede, though the former is coming off arthroscopic shoulder surgery and the latter is expected to sign a one-year deal with the Chisox.
- The Angels might be willing to move Orlando Cabrera to third to accommodate Miguel Tejada's desire to stay at short if that became a roadblock to a trade.
"It's hard because for me if I talk about it it's a lose-lose situation," Cabrera said. "If I say I don't want to move then they say `We're going to make you move.' Then I have to move. And then if I say yeah, I want to move, it might allow them to do crazy stuff. They can probably not being [sic] in Tejada and bring in somebody else and move me."
- Finally, though the Twins don't presently appear interested in bringing back Torii Hunter on his $12M option for 2007, that could change if Minnesota wins a title with him on the team.
Comments:
O-Cab at third? Now I've heard everything. Man, I hope those are the musings of the lame-brain writer and not those of the lame-brain front office.
Cabrera is a nice player and all, but shouldn't Stoneman put out the feelers on him this winter and see if anyone bites? This team has an awful lot of shortstops, Orlando makes the most money and really isn't anymore talented than the others.
Well, looking at this past season, Cabrera had only 13 more walks than Izturis, with 255 more at bats. Cabrera is 31, Izturis 25. Izzy has also improved across the board each year in the majors, most impressively drawing more walks than strike outs (though just barely at 38:35). I know you aren't that high on the guy, and I can see his limitations as clearly as you can. But he is clearly a better option on top of the order than either Cabrera or Figgins and I'd much rather go into spring with him and Aybar fighting for the position, keeping it warm for Brandon Wood, than Orlando Cabrera who will likely post another .300 OBP after a flukey .335 season. That number isn't very impressive in the first place, and it was the second highest of his career.
