Pickoff Moves
Today's Birthdays
Sid Fernandez LAN b. 1962, played 1983, All-Star: 1986-1987. Always wore number 50 in honor of his native Hawaii. The Dodgers gave up on him because of weight problems; no matter for the Mets, who took the left-hander in. In 1986, he won 16 games for them but did not start in the World Series because Davey Johnson was concerned about a lefty pitching in Fenway, yet he gave up only one run in 6.2 innings of relief. He took the loss in Game 5 of the 1988 NLCS, surrendering six runs over four innings of work, including a three-run jack to Kirk Gibson, one of only three hits the ailing outfielder would have in that series. His weight did eventually catch up to him, and his knees got bad; the Mets let him go after 1991, and after stints with the Orioles, Phillies, and Astros, he retired in 1997.
Ed Householder BRO b. 1869, played 1903, d. 1924-07-03
Gil Kubski CAL b. 1954, played 1980
Luis Polonia CAL b. 1963, played 1990-1993. This weak-hitting, speedy Dominican ranked 54th on the Top 100 Angels list, but at the expense of Mickey Rivers?
Steve Shirley LAN b. 1956, played 1982
Jose Valentin LAN b. 1969, played 2005. Good idea, but his early-season injury made things look worse than they were; still playing with the Mets.
Bullets
- Keith Law calls the A's play in yesterday's game "sloppy":
I hate to make a premature eulogy, but this series is about 90 percent over right now. The saving grace for Oakland is that its two best starters, at least potentially, are going in Games 3 and 4, although Rich Harden is a wild card. But Detroit is headed home up two games to none. The Tigers aree playing well, making contact, and Leyland's decision not to use Zumaya in Game 2 means that The Weapon goes into Game 3 with two days' rest. The A's are going to have to get a big performance from Harden and, at the same time, stop making the little mistakes that are adding up to losses.
- Write this day down on your calendars: Rob Neyer picks the Tigers to advance.
- The Tigers' Sean Casey tore his calf muscle and is probably done for the series (and likely for the postseason).
- Another Tiger with an injury: Joel Zumaya, who has a tight forearm, and his status is "unclear".
- Former Dodger Jae Seo signed a one-year, $1.2M deal with the Devil Rays.
- Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle died following a plane crash into a Manhattan building.
