The Roar Of The Tigers, The Smell Of The A's: Tigers 8, A's 5

Okay, so I'm trying too hard to shoehorn tonight's game into a title that fits from a 1965 musical. Nonetheless, the Tigers made it 2-0, remarkably on the home run of unexpected hero Alexis Gomez, who had probably the best game of his major league career out of the eight hole, driving in four, two on an RBI single and two more on his second career home run. Jim Leyland before the game said that, "We just took a shot that maybe, by chance, a lefty may have a shot," no doubt eyeing Loaiza's .319/.369/.522 line against lefties in the regular season.

Despite the title, the non-Esteban Loaiza A's actually played pretty well; Loaiza himself ended up taking the loss, surrendering seven runs, all earned. The game's other run came off Oakland closer Huston Street, who found himself dusted for a solo homer by Curtis Granderson. The A's made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth as they loaded the bases with two out and the Big Hurt at the plate, but he popped harmlessly to center to end the threat and the game.

Both teams fly to Detroit, where they will be greeted with some godawful weather (lows into the 30's with rain, and possible snow). Brr.

Six more, Kittycats, six more.

Postscript: I should probably mention one of the most interesting things about this game: Frank Thomas was 0-5, and for four of those, confronted mainly with the hard heat. Lessons for next year, Angels fans.
