Pickoff Moves
Today's Birthdays
Boom-Boom Beck BRO b. 1904, played 1933-1934, d. 1987-05-07. Given his nickname because of an episode at the old Baker Bowl; instead of giving the ball back to Casey Stengel, Beck threw the ball at the tin outfield wall, causing a reverberating "boom-boom". Hack Wilson, who had been relaxing, thought play had started again, and threw a bullet back to the infield.
Nick Cullop BRO b. 1900, played 1929, d. 1978-12-08
Brian Harper CAL b. 1959, played 1979, 1981. Presently the manager of the Angels' AAA Salt Lake Bees team.
Mets' Bats Awaken, Perez Gets It Done: Mets 12, Cardinals 5
It was all Mets past the fourth, turning into a laugher following the six-run sixth. My favorite part, of course, was Brad Thompson exiting the game with an ERA of infinity, following his surrender of five earned runs while making zero outs. In fact, only one of the Cards' six pitchers survived without surrendering a run, the little-used Randy Flores. The pitching was all about the Mets in this game, as Oliver Perez turned in one of his better (for him, these days) outings.Scott Spiezio looked awful in the two hole, something you could maybe have predicted by looking at the hacks he had taken in some of the prior game's at-bats. Really, none of the Cards looked remotely good at the plate, despite their five runs; it's no wonder they barely limped to the postseason.
Notes From Around Baseball
- The Angels will raise almost all ticket prices, the third increase in as many years, and have removed 9,300 seats from a buy-one-get-one-free deal.
- Giovanni Carrara has opted for free agency.
- Lou Piniella won't be the next Giants manager because of the distance from his Tampa, Fla. home.
- Ken Macha may not be with the A's next year despite having two years left on his contract.
Toward the end of the season, one member of the starting lineup was openly critical of Macha in the clubhouse. By the final weekend of the regular season, another prominent member of the team had joined in the criticism. Several players went so far as to take their complaints to Beane, telling him they did not want to return to the club if Macha remained as manager, according to sources.
- The A's have contacted Jay Payton about returning for 2007 and beyond, but Barry Zito isn't expected back, as he'll be too expensive in a pitching-light free agent class.
- Contract extension talks between the Cubs and Aramis Ramirez have stalled while the Cubs continue their search for a new manager — who is apparently going to be Lou Piniella.
Its true, the Braves did play at the Baker Bowl, when they visited Philadelphia.
The Baker Bowl was the Phillies home field. As I recall, it was Fenway in reverse, with a very short right field, much shorter then Fenway, and a very high, tin covered wall.
I see I am correct:
