Late Afternoon Notes
- According to the Boston Herald's Clubhouse Insider blog, J.D. Drew's contract will be announced after the start of the winter meetings, as a $56M/4-year deal with a fifth option year.
- Gary Matthews, Jr. is glad to be an Angel, and on the other side of a ... heated rivalry?
"There's been some pretty fierce competition between the Rangers and Angels, and we've had some brawls," Matthews said. "When the Rangers came in here, it was all business. But I enjoyed this rivalry that we had. It was something I think both teams looked forward to. We didn't talk about it a whole lot in the media. But just seeing the atmosphere on the field during batting practice, you didn't see a whole lot of talking between the teams, and buddy-buddy stuff.
Whatever. But I'll bet his supersized contract had something to do with this comment:"Secretly, one of the players over there with the Rangers wants to play in Anaheim. I'm not going to name any names, but I know it and he knows it," Matthews said with a grin Wednesday at an introductory news conference one week after he agreed to a $50 million, five-year contract with the Angels.
- Rod Barajas apparently backed out of a signed deal with the Blue Jays. That's not gonna go down well.
"If your word doesn't mean anything any more, and your signature don't mean anything, what kind of world do we live in," Ricciardi said. "It's all right. It worked out for the better. ... If he feels uncomfortable, we don't want him here. I was disappointed in the fact that the player would go back on his word and a new agent just came in and said we have no deal."
- How's this for scary pictures:
Randy Wolf's deal isn't so bad, but Pierre... until Bill Stoneman proved his utter incompetence by giving Matthews, Jr. such a lousy contract, Colletti was on his way to the title of "worst GM in the majors".
