Shawn Green LAN b. 1972, played 2000-2004, All-Star: 1999, 2002. A generally nice guy and an all-around good hitter, but I always got the impression with him that (a) there was something that prevented him from being a truly great hitter, and (b) he wasn't therefore the kind of player you could build an offense around. Still, a very good player before 2003, when he injured his shoulder (for which see Jon). His subsequent career has not been distinguished.
Carmen Mauro BRO b. 1926, played 1953, d. 2003-12-19
Junior Noboa CAL b. 1964, played 1988
Mike Vail LAN b. 1951, played 1984
Things I've Missed: News And Notes
- J.D. Drew to the Red Sox? Sure, why not. On the other hand, I should probably rethink my opinion of J.D. Drew now that Bill Plaschke agrees with me:
He wants out. He can have out," said Ned Colletti, Dodgers general manager. "If he's moving on, we're moving on."
Looks like the Dodgers "are in the market for more than one bat."Boras, Drew's agent, was surprised at Colletti's anger, saying this was just business.
"I never said anything like that when he didn't exercise the option on Eric Gagne, it works both ways," Boras said.
- The Padres made Bud Black's hiring official on Wednesday.
- The Cards may bring back Jim Edmonds, though not on his current contract. It's expected he will come back on a two-year deal with a salary "comparable" to his current $10M/year.
- Former Rangers manager Buck Showalter may go into the Indians' front office in an advisory position.
- Giants fans are having fun with this story about a man being tasered for wearing a Dodgers hat. The man refused to doff his cap at a Saginaw, MI city council meeting, and when he continued to refuse, Saginaw policeman Doug Stacer tasered him and sent him to jail. Ouch. Snarky commentary at BTF.
- The A's have made their move to Fremont official, though the size of the park is now being whittled to 32,000 to 35,000. Being on land currently leased by Cisco Systems, it will boast tons of their networking gear.
- Whoever thought that looking like the Angels was a bad thing?
- Kirk Gibson may join the Diamondbacks as the team's bench coach.
- Really old stuff: Nomar wants to be flexible. Good for him.
- Ramon Martinez will be back next year on a $850k/1 year contract.
