Lance Hendrickson A Dodger, Again, And Other Roster Notes
- Largely useless, garbage-time reliever, and sometime starter Mark Hendrickson will return to the Dodgers in 2007, to the tune of $2,925,000 and one year. The fact that he's working at all should tell you something about the state of pitching in the majors these days, and the availability of pitching from the Dodger farm more specifically. The middle of the Dodgers' relief corps, save for Joe Beimel and Jonathan Broxton, consist of aging and dubiously effective pitchers, rounded out by Elmer Dessens and Brett Tomko. All three are swingmen, with Hendrickson essentially a failed starter. There's a lot about this signing that points to it being an ego save for Ned Colletti, i.e., having made the mistake of getting him in the first place, he plans on confirming and compounding that mistake by extending him. If there is one thing I could do for the Dodgers to improve the team, it would be to erase the Devil Rays' front office phone number from Colletti's speed dial.
- The Padres cemented Josh Bard as their starting catcher for 2007, for $1.05M and one year, the fruit of one of the most brilliant and one-sided snookerings I've seen in a while. Oh, and they still have Cla Meredith, too. How's Doug Mirabelli working out for you, Boston?
- Ex-Dodger Dave Ross got a two-year deal with the Reds, for $4.5M, with a team option for 2009. His 21 homers ranked third among NL catchers in 2006.
- The Cards, faced with fewer and fewer choices, are allegedly — and likely, reluctantly — negotiating with Jeff Weaver for his return to the Redbirds.
- I missed this over the weekend, but it appears that the Padres gave Shawn Estes a minor league contract, along with former Angels backup catcher Todd Greene.
