Pickoff Moves
Today's Birthdays
Ruben Amaro CAL b. 1936, played 1969
Ralph Branca BRO b. 1926, played 1944-1953, 1956, All-Star: 1947-1949. Poor Ralph Branca: though he did throw the Shot Heard Round The World, it wasn't entirely his fault; the Dodgers should have had Clem Labine on the mound (q.v.), and more depth in the pitching staff. (Interestingly, though, 1951 was Branca's last good season.) Years later, he toured with Bobby Thomson, and the two became friends.
John Corriden BRO b. 1918, played 1946, d. 2001-06-04
Lenny Green LAA b. 1933, played 1964
George Shoch BRO b. 1859, played 1893-1897, d. 1937-09-30
Lee Walls LAN b. 1933, played 1962-1964, All-Star: 1958, d. 1993-10-11
Erstad's Right Out For The Rockies, Other Roster Notes
- The Denver Post says that Colorado has stopped any pursuit they had of Darin Erstad after having been persuaded that he will sign elsewhere.
- The A's signed Adam Melheuse to a one-year, $815k deal.
- Improbably, the Rangers re-signed Jerry Hairston.
