Pickoff Moves
Today's Birthdays
Cal Abrams BRO b. 1924, played 1949-1952, d. 1997-02-25
Moe Berg BRO b. 1902, played 1923, d. 1972-05-29
Woody English BRO b. 1906, played 1937-1938, All-Star: 1933, d. 1997-09-26. You be careful out there among them English.
Chico Fernandez BRO b. 1932, played 1956
William Fischer BRO b. 1891, played 1913-1914, d. 1945-09-04
Ron Gant ANA b. 1965, played 2000, All-Star: 1992, 1995. Peripatetic, all-or-nothing slugger whose best years were spent in Atlanta and Cincinnati; what Jim Edmonds eventually became, by way of the eminently forgettable Kent Bottenfield.
God, Bullets, Rightchere
- The Angels are getting annoyed already with Gary Matthews, Jr.'s sphinx act over HGH shipments.
"There are legal issues that maybe preclude us from getting all the information in a timely manner," said Tim Mead, the team's vice president of communications. "We're not going to pass judgment. All the organization is entitled to is as much honesty and information as possible. No one wants to be caught blindsided."
Stupid and lame. I happen to think the Rev's seven lies would be good to hear about now, don't you? - Bartolo Colon may be ready to throw off the mound before Jered Weaver.
- John Lackey may miss his Saturday start due to strep throat.
- Ervin Santana tossed a pair of scoreless innings in an otherwise unremarkable spring training game; the Royals and Angels both had a large number of random players on the field, maybe the Angels a little more so than the Royals. Nick Gorneault and Tommy Murphy both went 2-3, Gorneault with one RBI and Murphy with two. (Box)
- Mike Lieberthal is in go-slow mode.
- Randy Wolf wasn't so sharp on the mound in his first spring training appearance, giving up one earned run over two innings on four hits and a walk; the Dodgers lost 7-2, with the kind of early-spring lineup you'd expect to see at a game like this.
- Despite his "eh" outing, the Dodgers look like they'll have Wolf at the number two slot in the rotation. Don't take it personally, Randy, but the team reserves the right to reshuffle the rotation, possibly as early as April 12; Wolf has allowed a lifetime average against at Miller Park of only .191, and a 2.84 ERA against the Giants in what would be his second start.
- Matt White has "instant wealth" and now he's being beseiged by interview requests. Simple solution to that problem, Matt: stop bragging to people about stuff like that. Cat's out of the bag now, though. And anyway, just how "instant" is setting up a rock quarry?
- Mark Kotsay's back is flaring up again, and he's flown to Los Angeles to see a specialist.
- Former Dodger Duaner Sanchez may start the season on the DL after suffering a shoulder injury in a taxi accident last year.
- The Rangers signed four players to one-year deals, including Ian Kinsler; the team wants to sew him up on a long-term deal, but both sides have yet to agree on terms.
OT: Diet And Exercise Really Work? Who Knew?!
Report after two and a half months: 188 lbs, 79 mg/dl glucose, well on the low end of normal. That's down 40 lbs and 40 mg/dl from November, by the way; I might even submit to posting a picture. It's a journey, not a destination; relapses are not allowed, or at least, would be profoundly demoralizing and possibly dangerous to my health. But, yeah, I feel a hell of a lot better these days.Labels: angels, dodgers, spring training
maybe you covered him in depth last year, but Moe Berg was an extraoridnary dude.
i'd like to say i'm heaing over to hohokam for the game today, but i have something else schedule, so i still ain't made it to Cub heaven yet (and i just found out my week's trip for work to Windy City the 3rd week of April was cancelled. crap - hand picked that week to see both the Cubs and Sox in town, and the Sox were playing the Angels too. all on the company's dime).
on the bright side, i'll be able to get over to Tempe Diable this morning i think to see some practice - i.e., who won't be on the bus to Mesa.
