Pickoff Moves

Today's Birthdays

Fritz Brickell LAA b. 1935, played 1961, d. 1965-10-15

Roy Evans BRO b. 1874, played 1902-1903, d. 1915-08-15

Jeff Hamilton LAN b. 1964, played 1986-1991. Despite spending all of August 1988 on the DL, he helped the Dodgers win the rings that cemented Tommy Lasorda's Hall of Fame bid. According to some sources, he almost became a significant part of a trade that would have sent Barry Bonds to Los Angeles, and can you imagine Gary Sheffield and Barry Bonds in the same locker room, let alone on the same field?

Paul Powell LAN b. 1948, played 1973, 1975

Don Rose CAL b. 1947, played 1972

Dave Ross LAN b. 1977, played 2002-2004. Like another favorite catcher of mine, Paul Lo Duca, a late bloomer; the Reds signed him to a 2-year/$4.5M deal last month to my surprise, but I guess they figured his .255/.353/.579 (247 AB) 2006 season was repeatable. We'll see if it is, but the fact that he hit more than half of his home runs at home despite playing less than 50% of the time there is probably a Sign.

Props For The Times' Web Stuff

Some good stories in the Times today about the Web, which I wanted to use as a springboard to praise (for a change): The Times deserves praise for their efforts in this direction; everyone's stumbling toward some new business model for dealing with the Web, and while the path remains unclear, new experiments are indeed welcome. Despite Tim Cavanaugh's gripe that "the Web is aptly named: we who are stuck in it long to escape", the number of eyeballs spending time there continues to grow.

Comments:
Stephen Bochco has "significant success" in the entertainment BUSINESS, but I don't think he has been successful at creating "entertainment"...

Hill Street Blues. I'd say Bochco's done his share.

Hamilton also pitched in that crazy game against the Astros where Eddie Murray ended up playing third and Fernando was at first. If memory serves, Rafael Ramirez singled just over Fernando's head to win it.
