Minor League Scorebook
Wood: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Morales: 2-5, 1 2B
Gorneault: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Evans: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Bonilla: (W, 1-0), 5.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 8 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 2 HR, 4.50 ERA
Serrano: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.50 ERA
When your team leaps out to a five run lead in the third, you would think that's the ballgame right there, but then, I'm not used to the thin air parks of the PCL. Tucson put the hammer down on Henry Bonilla, a Carter administration baby (1978), to the tune of five runs, all earned, including a two-run shot to Sidewinder left fielder Jeff Salazar in the second, and a two-run dinger to Dee Brown in the top of the third.
The Bees came right back in the bottom of the third. With one out, Adam Pavkovich reached on an error, and he was immediately cashed in on a triple off the bat of Nathan Haynes, and a Casey Smith double plated Haynes, too. Brandon Wood then collected his third home run of the year, a two-run shot. Later in the fifth, Wood walked and Kendry Morales singled; Nick Gorneault drove both in on a double that chased Tucson starter Evan MacLane.
Adam Pavkovich was ejected in the eighth by home plate umpire Steve Fritzoni, probably for arguing balls and strikes (he struck out as the final at bat of the 7th inning).
Sutton: 2-4
Reilly: 2-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Morris: 2-3, 1 RBI
Weaver: (W, 1-0), 7.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 7 K, 2 BB, 0.82 ERA
Lynch: 1.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1.50 ERA
A real showcase for Jered Weaver, who pitched seven strong innings in a clear message to Angels management: "I'm ready for the Show." He had the most trouble with Dodger Rafael Furcal, currently rehabbing from an ankle sprain. As the leadoff batter, Furcal lined Weaver's first offering into right field for a single. However, Furcal left the game early when his ankle tightened.
The Quakes got their runs as the result of a Patrick Reilly solo homer and a Dallas Morris RBI single; Jamie Hoffmann provided some theatrics in the ninth to drive in Ivan De Jesus on a sac fly. Kevin Lynch, Brad Beck, and Darren O'Day daisy-chained to end the game, Beck giving up the fly (the run charged to Lynch). Weaver ended the game with a 0.82 ERA. Think about that.
Loney: 1-4, 3 RBI, 1 K
Garcia: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Freeman: 2-4
Houlton: (W, 1-0), 5.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 2.79 ERA
White: 3.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 6 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 1.42 ERA
D.J. Houlton struggled through five innings, but once again the bats were the story, as Tony Abreu went 3-4 with a walk, and James Loney drove in three. Choo Freeman even went 2-4 while Matt White gave up a run on two hits but struck out six.
Dunlap: 0-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
McDougall: 3-4, 2 2B
Juarez: (W, 2-0), 7.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
Orenduff, J: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
An excellent outing for William Juarez, giving up five hits and walking one over seven scoreless innings while striking out six. 28-year-old third baseman Marshall McDougall had a great night at the plate, going 3-4, and Xavier Paul drove in a pair on three hits, two of which were doubles.
De Jesus: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
Dewitt: 2-4, 1 2B
Castillo, J: (L, 0-2), 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 0 BB, 6.75 ERA
Alvarez: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 7.94 ERA
