Angels Really Do Call Up Wood, Option Morales

I'm flabbergasted, and I can't imagine this will last very long; Wood was hitting .278/.370/.468 in small sample sizes at Salt Lake. He really needs to stay there, but the Angels claim they need "more infield coverage":
"Right now, we're going to see what [Shea Hillenbrand] can do DHing, and he's going to be in there for most of the time," Scioscia said. "There aren't many at-bats for Kendry. And at third base, Brandon is going to give us the flexibility if he plays a game to have [Maicer] Izturis play somewhere else, or get a rest or give us utility backup and maybe give us a look into the offense coming into these next four or five days. And we will evaluate it when [Chone Figgins] is ready.

"I think, right now, it's probably short-term, but you never know. You don't know where the team is going to be in four or five days. I think Brandon got up in our depth chart and, right now, will open some of our coverage up playing third and short."

This is probably going to turn out the way Casey Kotchman's first callup did: nice try, kid, see you next year, especially once Figgins returns.

Update: that is exactly what the Times speculates.

Wolf In The House: Giants 6, Dodgers 4

It's hard to take much of a shine to the Dodgers' rotation, except to the extent that none of them are really terrible. But all that's saying is that guys like the aging, declining Jason Schmidt, the collapsible Brad Penny, and the reliable-as-a-heroin-addict Brett Tomko are really just good number threes. There's no glaring holes in the rotation on any given day, but on any given day they could also melt down for you, too, and there's also no real ace. Randy Wolf fits nicely into that mix, and he gave up his second career homer yesterday to Bonds, not to mention another to Happy Pete (Pedro Feliz). A tedious game that just got away early from the Dodgers, mainly because Wolf changed his first-inning strategy to get more aggressive in the strike zone in the first. It was a huge mistake, obviously.

Do you know how this will affect Wood's service time in the majors in regards to his free agency? Hopefully, we're not calling him up now and then having it hurt us in 5 or 6 years.

The clock starts now.

Not seeing what the big problem is. The Angels want an extra left-side infielder to get through a rough patch. They're clear in their intentions to Wood. It gives him a momentary taste of the bigs - nothing wrong with getting his feet wet, without any pressure on him. And he might actually help the team win a game. Unless they're not planning on calling him up at all his year, even in September, service time is not a consideration.

So what am I missing?

I'm not seeing the problem here, either. Even if it is just a one week taste, it gives them a chance to see what he can do with major league pitching, and gauge just how far off he really is. And you never know - maybe he hits the ground running and gives them a tough decision to make once Chonie comes back. And I concur with Jon: he was going to be up at some point this year, so the service time shouldn't really be an issue.

Worked for Howie Kendrick. Come up, get a taste, go back down, and next time you're called up, you don't have to deal with all the distractions and pressures of a major league debut. You can focus on simply playing.

I don't think service time is much of an issue. This isn't the Royals we're talking about. If the Angels want to keep him after six years, they'll have the resources to do so.

Carlos -- based on his numbers in AAA, I would say, not. He'll be returned to Salt Lake on schedule.

i'm indifferent to this either way as to Woods development, or service time.

but it makes sense for the Angels themselves - Wood is a better temporary solution for the left side than Morales.

But they should have DH'd Morales more when he was up here (like ALL the time).

Since they didn't, bring up help for the left side. bring up the kid and give him a taste - but he definitely needs some more time in AAA.
