Can We Send Santana To AAA Now? Rangers 7, Angels 6

Who cares that Ervin Santana didn't get the loss? The important thing is the weak Angels offense gave him a showering of homers — including two by Gary Matthews, Jr. — a gift of six runs, and he proceeded to squander it. Enough. With Joe Saunders wasting away at Salt Lake, the Angels have better options for a number five starter. Let Santana be inconsistent on the road in the minors. As I pointed out in the gameday thread at Halos Heaven, his road splits are actually getting worse this year. Enough already. Time to send a message that he needs to get serious about fixing whatever the hell is wrong with him on the road, because Joe Saunders doesn't seem to turn into a batting practice pitcher on the road.

Speaking of lousy pitching, Scot Shields blew yet another one. Justin Speier, hurry back.

Update: It seems I'm not the only one thinking about demoting Santana, with Mike DiGiovanna's latest notes column suggesting that while the team isn't close to demoting him, "the Angels' patience with the 24-year-old right-hander seems to be wearing thin."

"Once he got into his flow and got his delivery together, he made some terrific pitches out there," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "But in between, there was a lot of inconsistency. He has to find an ability to repeat pitches and throw the ball with more consistency. He has a terrific arm, and he's just been searching."
It begins to sound like Ramon Ortiz Part 2.

How many more of these crappy starts do we have to endure? Through the All-Star break, Santana's rotation slots line up thusly:

5/18 vs. Dodgers
5/24 @ Detroit
5/29 vs. Seattle
6/3 vs. Baltimore
6/9 @ St. Louis
6/15 @ (the real) Los Angeles
6/20 vs. Houston
6/26 vs. Kansas City
7/3 @ Texas
So that's four automatic losses and five possible wins, assuming he doesn't freak out and suddenly have relapses at home, and the offense can give him some support.

Agree - but first, will Magic get us something of value right NOW in a trade? The only downside of sending him down is it reduces his perceived value in the market.

But i agree, let's see if Magic can get some road focus in AAA parks. With Saunders, we also get a LHP - with our depth, it is time to send him a message.

Let Magic start his next home game(s) and be looking hard at trade possibilities, but don't run him out there on the road again for a while.

The "sending him to AAA will degrade his trade value" argument fails to consider that his road record has already done this.

Santana is the opposite of Washburn a few years back. As I recall, Washburn could pitch great except at home.

How about starting Santana only at home, while having somebody take his starts on the road..possibly Moseley or Saunders. Then during home games those guys would be in the pen. Basically we would have 6 starters.

That would require the Angels have 12 pitchers. To me, that's a bad waste of resources. Further, his record at home is insufficiently good that I would really want to consider that.

I'm afraid I've got to ask again : isn't it about time you re-titled this bog "An Angels blog"? It's pretty obvious your heart isn't with the Dodgers at all. They've just swept a series - no concern of yours, it seems - with each game completely different from the others.

You just couldn't care less. That's OK, you're an Angels fan. No problem. Just don't call it "an Angels/Dodgers double play blog", since it isn't one, and your coverage is an insult to the Dodgers. There are lots of other Dodgers blogs, that's fine.

Do it before the Angels/Dodgers series next week - cheap way to pretend. Or after - that would make an acceptable farewell, I guess.

Honestly, it's really OK. I just don't understand why you want to maintain the pretense.

It hasn't been, not since the traffic episode with the Dodgers especially. Josh Rawitch just made me realize how wholly dysfunctional the Dodgers front office has become. I don't think I've been this late in the season before going to a Dodger game (I still haven't been to the park). The mass of their fans don't seem to mind, and so I guess nobody else cares. But Frank 'N' Jamie just make me more and more apathetic about the Dodgers. It's kind of ironic in that they were the initial reason for this blog; now, yeah, they've become more of a chore. When something like this weekend hits, and we've got company, and a dozen other things going on, something's gotta give.
