Minor League Scorebook

2007-05-03: Salt Lake 1, Portland 2 #
Murphy: 1-4, 1 K
Mathis: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Evans: 0-4, 3 K
Morales: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Gorneault: 1-4, 2 K
Eylward: 1-2, 2 BB
Bonilla: 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 3.86 ERA
Wilhite, M: (L, 1-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 3.06 ERA
Salt Lake committed four errors in this one, one each by shortstop Casey Smith, catcher Jeff Mathis, pitcher Matt Wilhite — and a missed catch by Kendry Morales on a seventh-inning pickoff from Wilhite that resulted in Luke Carlin reaching second, and eventually scoring. Not a lot of offense going on here, including an 0-for-3 with a walk line by Terry Evans, batting out of the three hole and playing right. His opponent was former Dodger prospect Ryan Ketchner, now in the Padres system; he struck out eight Bees and walked three.

Incidentally, Wednesday's suspended game will be completed on June 15.

2007-05-03: Arkansas 1, Tulsa 3 #
Rodriguez, S: 0-4, 1 K
Wilson: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB
Holcomb: (L, 0-2), 3.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 3 BB, 9.00 ERA
Shell: 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 0.68 ERA
James Holcomb made his second start since returning from extended spring training, a rehab stint to repair yet another set of injuries. He didn't survive into the fourth and got tagged with his second loss. Steven Shell had to relieve him and did a brilliant job, striking out five over three innings while walking none. Shell has allowed only two earned runs so far this season, and has a 9.74 K/9 and a 10.5 K/BB ratio.

Wednesday's rainout has been rescheduled for the June series on the 13th-16th.

2007-05-03: Lancaster 11, Rancho Cucamonga 7 #
Statia: 0-3, 2 BB
Sutton: 2-5, 1 2B
Renz: 3-5, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K
Johnson: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Nieves: 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Thomas: (L, 1-2), 2.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 2 HR, 10.80 ERA

Incinelli: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.60 ERA
Home runs by Jordan Renz and Ben Johnson weren't enough as the Quakes fell to the Jet Hawks in a slugfest. Amalio Diaz, brilliant last season with the Quakes and here returning to this level with a rough start, gave up three singles, a walk, a home run, and a scoring wild pitch in the top of the fourth.
2007-05-03: Cedar Rapids 1, Clinton 5 #
Bourjos: 1-4, 1 2B
Trumbo: 2-4, 1 2B
Conger: 1-4, 1 K
Mount: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Phillips: 0-3, 2 K
O'Sullivan: (L, 1-3), 6.0 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 9 H, 6 K, 3 BB, 4.03 ERA
Browning: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 4.50 ERA
The Clinton LumberKings led all the way, with Christopher Pettit driving in Peter Bourjos on an RBI single in the top of the eighth as Cedar Rapids' only offense. Sean O'Sullivan was an earned run away from a quality start, picking up one unearned run on his Pettit's throwing error in the fifth. Both sides committed three errors each, including one by O'Sullivan.

2007-05-03: Sacramento 11, Las Vegas 8 #
Abreu: 2-5, 1 2B, 2 K
Loney: 2-5, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 K
Kemp: 1-3, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Young: 0-4, 1 BB, 2 K
LaRoche: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Stults: (L, 2-2), 4.2 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 10 H, 5 K, 4 BB, 1 HR, 6.28 ERA
Lundberg: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 7.15 ERA
Brazoban: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 2.25 ERA
Alexander: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 12.27 ERA
A remarkably entertaining game despite the fact that it was almost all Sacramento doing the scoring for the first seven innings. Eric Stults couldn't finish the fifth; he gave up consecutive two-out triples in the top of the second, a solo homer in the top of the third, and worked his way out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the top of the fourth.

Luis E. Gonzalez gave up another run on a walk and a triple to Donnie Murphy, and then walked the bases loade; Spike Lundberg came in to replace him, and gave up a grand slam to Daric Barton, but managed to retire the side after once again loading up the bases, the last batter in the sequence reaching on a hit-by-pitch.

The 51's scored in the first, eighth, and ninth innings; inbetween, they went in order twice, and failed to get a batter past second. Tony Abreu started a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth with no outs that got squelched when Connor Robertson got Delwyn Young, Andy LaRoche, and Mitch Jones out in order.
