More Roster Notes
A busy day for transactional news, it seems...
- Former Dodger, Ranger, and Padre Chan Ho Park has been DFA'd by the Mets; he will likely be replaced by another ex-Dodger, Aaron Sele, or Jorge Sosa. He could reject the assignment and become a free agent. (Also via AP.)
- The Padres activated Russell Branyan from the bereavement list and outrighted reserve catcher Pete Laforest to AAA Portland.
- It turns out the injury suffered by Reggie Sanders in Wednesday's game against the Angels was much more serious than first thought, as he appears to have a hamstring tear that will put him on the 15-day DL.
- Giants starter Russ Ortiz has gone on the 15-day DL with an inflammed nerve in his right elbow. The Giants recalled OF Kevin Frandsen from AAA Fresno to replace him for at least three days, but MLB.com reports phenom Tim Lincecum is "likely" to start Saturday. Lincecum is 4-0 with a 0.29 ERA for Fresno, with 46 strikeouts over 31 innings.
- I normally don't care about injuries to teams in other divisions, but since injuries to the Yankees pitching staff recently came up, it bears some repeating that Carl Pavano will undergo examination by orthopedist Dr. James Andrews; rumor is that he'll need Tommy John surgery. While the Yanks now have Mike Mussina activated from the 15-day DL, they sent rookie Phil Hughes to the 15-day DL with a hamstring strain. His was the fourth hamstring strain suffered by Yankees' pitchers, and Hughes is the seventh pitcher to hit the DL.
One consequence of this spate of injuries was the firing of strength-and-conditioning coach Marty Miller.
To fill the holes caused by all these injuries, the Yanks are bringing up Darrell Rasner and Matt DeSalvo, presumably from AAA Scranton (and how weird it is to write that — I'm still used to it being Columbus). New York will be the first team ever to use ten starting pitchers over their first 30 games.
