Minor League Scorebook
News
- The Angels placed Maicer Izturis on the 15-day DL and recalled Howie Kendrick from AAA Salt Lake. After you read about his night below, you'll understand why...
- Bill Stoneman rejected outright the possibility of Troy Percival
returning as a player.
"With the strength of our pen — we have as strong if not stronger a pen than when we did not ask him back — I think that's probably out," Stoneman said. "To think we're looking for help for the bullpen, that's not where our priorities are at."
- The Chronicler has his periodic watchlist update posted, a very good read that I aspire to replicate for the Dodgers one of these here days.
- Jason Schmidt will throw a simulated game Friday; he'll need to get two in, at least, before starting a rehab assignment.
Scores
Kendrick: 2-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Gorneault: 0-4
Wood: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Brown: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Mathis: 0-2, 1 BB
Saunders: (W, 2-3), 6.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 9 K, 2 BB, 4.30 ERA
Joe Saunders struck out a season-high nine batters through six innings and gave up only a pair of runs to lead the Bees to a 4-2 victory over Sacramento. Howie Kendrick picked up his third home run of the season and his second in as many days; he also stole second and drove in a run on an RBI single. Kendrick's hitting .320/.346/.720 since returning to the PCL.
Reliever Marcus Gwyn collected his fourth save of the year; he's allowed only three earned runs all year in 23.2 IP, good for a 1.14 ERA. Jason Bulger struck out the side in order in the seventh, and has his ERA down to a very respectable 2.79. Not only that, but he's striking out batters again (13.03 K/9) while maintaining good control (2.42 K/BB).
The Angels' opponent was a rehabbing Esteban Loaiza, who gave up three runs on five hits over 2.2 IP. Mark Kotsay, also rehabbing, doubled, walked, and went 2-2.
Peel, A: 4-6, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Pride: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 3 BB, 1 K
Rodriguez, S: 4-6, 2 RBI, 1 K
Sandoval, F: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K
Collins: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 K
Adenhart: 2.2 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 9 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 3.60 ERA
Pullin: (BS, 1)(L, 0-2) (in relief), 0.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 4.87 ERA
Rodriguez, R: 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 6.55 ERA
Gad. Adenhart's fourth straight bad or at least uninspiring performance; he hasn't come close to a quality start this month, his last one being on April 29. He only lasted 2.2 innings here, and the Travs' ensuing pitching didn't work too well, either. He blew an early eight-run lead bequested to him by Curtis Pride, who homered and went 5-5, and Aaron Peel, who hit for the cycle.
Sutton: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Remole: 2-4, 1 K
Toussaint: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Butcher: 7.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 8 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 1.50 ERA
Jepsen: (L, 0-3) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 2.89 ERA
Another very strong outing by Brok Butcher, who posted his eighth straight quality start of the year. In fact, all of his starts have been quality starts. Too bad Kevin Jepsen couldn't hold on to the win.
Pettit: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Trumbo: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Conger: 1-3, 1 K
Phillips: 0-3, 2 K
Brandt: (W, 3-0), 6.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 6 K, 0 BB, 1.11 ERA
Doug Brandt's secret? A 9.74 K/9, a 5.86 K/BB, and more than twice as many outs on the ground as in the air. Of course, it helps that he's 23, maybe a little old for this league. Christopher Pettit went 3-4 with a double and a homer, missing the cycle by a triple. Ryan Mount went 2-4 and was caught stealing home in the bottom of the third, 2-5-2-5-6.
Kemp: 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 K
Young: 2-5, 2 2B
Huckaby: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Maza: 4-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Perez: 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Pinango: 4.0 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 7 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 3.00 ERA
Hoorelbeke: (W, 1-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 6.53 ERA
Brazoban: 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.98 ERA
Okay, so maybe Miguel Pinango doesn't walk on water. Luis Maza was almost perfect at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a double and driving in two. It would have been three but Ken Huckaby ended a seventh inning rally by getting thrown out at the plate. Mitch Jones drove in the go-ahead run.
Casey Hoorelbeke got the win in relief by pitching a scoreless inning and a third. Yhency Brazoban got his third save of the season by inducing a flyball double play in the bottom of the eighth to get out of a men-on-the-corners, one-out jam, and retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Incidental note: the 51's opposition starting pitcher was former Angel Jake Woods, who only lasted four innings.
Mitchell: 3-4, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Denker, T: 2-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Dewitt: 1-4
De Jesus: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Harper: 2-3, 2 RBI, 1 K
Godwin: 2-3, 1 BB
McDonald: 3.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 8 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 3.50 ERA
Pratt: (L, 2-3) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 7 R, 7 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 7 BB, 4.41 ERA
James McDonald had his first bad outing in over a month and still owns a sub-4.00 ERA. In the Cal League, that's noteworthy. Both sides traded zeroes for the first two frames, but after Inland Empire opened up the game with a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, Lancaster came right back with four in the bottom of the frame, including a two-run, one-out homer from Zachary Daeges, and a two-out, bases-loaded double from Michael Hall.
The 66ers loaded the bases in the top of the fourth on three consecutive walks, but nothing came of it. Lancaster really put the game away in the bottom of the fifth when they posted seven runs, all charged to Jordan Pratt.
Jamie Hoffman drove in three of Inland Empire's seven runs.
Lizarraga: 2-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Peterson: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
Bell: 3-5, 2 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K
Mattingly: 1-5, 1 K
Van Slyke: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Santana: 0-1
Wall: (W, 2-5), 5.0 IP, 7 R, 5 ER, 8 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 6.00 ERA
Another slugfest. It should probably be noted that Preston Mattingly has been moved to second base over the last week, though in this game he appeared as DH. Joshua Bell and Francisco Lizarraga both homered, Lizarraga's capping the four-run fourth inning and providing the game winner. Adolfo Gonzalez and Josh Wall both made fielding errors that contributed to two unearned runs for the Bees.
