Anderson Cranky
I was going to do a general UTK summary post, but since this is the only other item of interest (aside from Eric Chavez not heading to the DL, Justin Duchscherer inching closer to a return, and Mike Piazza's already-reported-upon return to catching, and the previously mentioned comments about Jason Schmidt), I thought I'd just throw this in here:
Garret Anderson is back on the DL with a recurrence of the hip flexor strain that had him on the list recently. Anderson never looked fully comfortable in the field or on the basepaths, with one source saying "he's uncommunicative and moody. [Reggie Willits]'s taking his job, and he's seeing the age turn over quickly in Anaheim, so this isn't going to help." Don't be surprised to see Anderson miss a very similar amount of time to his last stint, especially if Willits continues to outproduce him.
Comments:
If the guy didn't insist on playing the field, he'd be on the DL less. This guy needs to start setting a reasonable loss limit. Must sting to have the universal market correcting him so inevitably and publicly at this point.
Reviewing the production the Angels are getting out of him, he's not exactly a bad performer; there's an argument that if he'd keep quiet and accept a rotating DH job, he'd be more useful than Hillenbrand.
Yes, that's essentially what I meant in a less ponderous manner of speaking. The Angels would be fine with GA getting 450 ABs a season, primarily at DH. Protestations notwithstanding, Anderson learned to operate satisfactorily at DH last season (.301 avg .483 slg .825 ops in 188 PAs). His insistence on playing the OF falls into the same class of commiserable vanity as Hatcher's hook on the hair dye. Go into thy gray day gracefully, boys! Do conserve thy means.
