Ervin Santana, NL Pitcher: Angels 9, Cardinals 3
Incidental notes:
- Garret Anderson was lifted in the fifth for Reggie Willits with tightness in his right leg, the same leg he was having trouble with earlier. The possibility of another DL stint is hard to ignore, and the Times says he will not play tomorrow.
- Casey Kotchman was lifted in the sixth with a bruised right elbow. During the game he was declared to be day-to-day after X-rays found no broken bones.
- The Angels are tied with the Red Sox for the major league lead with 40 wins, and continue to post the best start in franchise history with a 40-23 record. Woo hoo! The Halos continue on a pace for 103 wins. (Not that I think they're actually this good, but I'm definitely enjoying it while it lasts.)
- Great quote about the Seattle game from Lookout Landing:
Who needs to go on a minor league rehab assignment when you can just play the NL?
Weaver got yanked after the fourth with back trouble, but the M's won anyway 6-5, taking advantage of an unusually porous Padres bullpen. - Speaking of the AL West, everyone else kept pace, with the Rangers beating the Brewers 4-3. The A's drubbed the Giants 6-0, doing most of their damage against former Athletic Barry Zito. Zito didn't make it into the fifth, and Danny Haren is becoming a scary monster; Chad Gaudin and Haren lead the AL in starter ERA.
- All three AL West teams have now won their weekend series.
- Speaking of the AL West, the only three divisions with three or more winning teams are the AL West (Angels, Mariners, Athletics), the NL East (Mets, Braves, Phillies), and the NL West (Padres, Diamondbacks, Dodgers).
- Despite the lie propagated in the 'toon above, Edmonds did not follow himself in the game; the two-out singles in the sixth belonged to Rolen and Encarnacion.
