Minor League Scorebook
News
- 12th-round prep pitcher Jordan Walden, recently signed to a $1M bonus as what may be the Angels' last draft-and-follow, will report to the AZL Angels when their season begins on June 22.
- The Dodgers disabled Yhency Brazoban with a shoulder injury:
"He felt a distinct pop on the last pitch in the back of the shoulder with a fair amount of pain," said Conte. "A pop with pain doesn't indicate anything good is going on. The exam indicated it's pretty sore and will not be resolved in short time."
The Dodgers recalled Eric Hull as Brazoban's unexpected replacement. Who is Hull?Hull is a 27-year-old right-hander with no previous Major League experience, an undrafted free agent out of the University of Portland who has spent a six-year professional career flying under the radar because of what he lacks -- size and an eye-popping fastball -- but made it to The Show anyway because of what he does -- get people out.
For Las Vegas this year, Hull is 2-2 with a 3.62 ERA in 20 relief appearances covering 27 1/3 innings with 27 strikeouts, but also 15 walks. Right-handers were hitting only .219 against him, while lefties were batting .276.
"He's not a giant of a person [maybe 5-foot-11], but he has a big heart," said Little. "He'll compete and throw strikes."
- The Dodgers further recalled Hong-Chih Kuo from AAA Las Vegas, and sent down Andy LaRoche after his one opportunity to face brother Adam, presently playing first base for the Pirates.
- Not strictly minor league related, but I'll throw it in here: Jae Seo, whose trade brought Toby Hall and Mark Hendrickson to the Dodgers from the Devil Rays, has been DFA'd.
- Via Jon, here's an AP piece about Steve Yeager's recent accident.
Scores
Mathis: 1-4, 1 K
Wood: 1-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Evans: 1-4, 1 K
Gorneault: 3-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI
Shell: 3.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 5.21 ERA
Bulger: (W, 3-1) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2.42 ERA
The last time Brandon Wood hit jacks in consecutive games was April 10-11; today's was a three-run bomb that turned a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 lead. Nick Gorneault homered twice, including a two-run tater that capped scoring in the five-run eighth.
Steven Shell made only his second start of the season, and gave up three runs, all earned. Jason Bulger successfully made it out of May without giving up an earned run, and expanded his streak to June. Marcus Gwyn got his seventh save by pitching a scoreless ninth, and, as is his custom, striking out exactly one batter.
Wilson: 0-2, 2 BB
Peel, A: 2-4, 1 RBI
Collins: 0-3, 1 RBI
Gonzalez, M: (W, 2-2), 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 3.50 ERA
Arredondo: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 2.70 ERA
The Travs won this game despite having a cleanup hitter (Matt Pali) hitting .191 and a number three guy (an amazingly slumping Curtis Pride) hitting .238. The win came mainly on the back of Miguel Gonzalez's one-run game, and the three relievers who followed him. Former Dirtbag Cesar Ramos took the loss despite pitching a quality start plus, seven innings of two-earned-run ball; one of those runs crossed the plate in the seventh when Michael Collins reached on the fielding error of shortstop Luis Cruz.
Statia: 0-4
Butcher: (L, 3-4), 9.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 1.80 ERA
Brok Butcher threw a complete game and lost. It was nevertheless such a strong outing that I still heart him, and so should you. He's recorded nothing but quality starts since being moved to the rotation on April 15.
Ben Johnson's RBI double in the first scored the Quakes' only run.
Trumbo: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Conger: 3-4, 2 2B, 1 RBI
Phillips: 1-4, 2 K
Herndon: (W, 6-2), 7.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 7 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 3.14 ERA
Browning: 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 4.55 ERA
Kenneth Herndon posted one of his strongest outings of the year on the way to a Cedar Rapids victory, who got strong offensive performances from Mark Trumbo and Hank Conger to back it up. Peoria managed a couple stolen bases off Conger.
Loney: 0-4, 2 K
Kemp: 1-4
Jones, M: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Young: 1-4, 2 K
Pinango: (L, 2-1), 6.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 8 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 4.00 ERA
Miguel Pinango has had worse outings, but the 51's weren't able to recover as they faced the Brewers' top pitching prospect, Yovani Gallardo, who went a PCL-leading 8-1 with the victory. Gallardo leads the minor leagues with 95 strikeouts as well, fanning 11 51's in this game.
Mitch Jones' two-run homer in the ninth against R.A. Dickey broke the Sounds' shutout.
Ruan: 2-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Paul: 0-4, 2 K
McDougall: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Dunlap: 2-4
Gonzalez, J: 2-4, 2 K
Hammes: (L, 0-2), 5.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 7 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 4.19 ERA
Alexander: 3.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 4 BB, 7.63 ERA
Not much going on here, though the loss was the first decision in a start for Zach Hammes, who's made three thus far; this was his longest outing of the year. Mark Alexander's woes continued. Marshall McDougall homered in the loss.
De Jesus: 1-3
McDonald: (L, 4-4), 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 8 K, 0 BB, 3.07 ERA
A very good outing for James McDonald, but an even better one for Wade Leblanc, who struck out 10 and came within two outs of a complete game shutout. Former Bruin Kyle Wilson continues to rack up the zero frames, posting his fourth multi-inning game of the year; he's only allowed a single run since his first appearance of the season on May 12.
Bell: 0-3, 1 BB
Mattingly: 1-3, 1 3B, 1 K
Wall: (L, 2-7), 6.2 IP, 3 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 9 K, 3 BB, 5.33 ERA
Arguably Josh Wall's best game of the year, certainly his best since a 7.0 IP, 6-K outing on April 17, but he took the loss anyway as he couldn't get offensive support. All the runs against Wall were unearned thanks to a throwing error from Preston Mattingly, who threw away an Eddy Rodriguez grounder in the top of the fourth with two out.
