Minor League Scorebook
News
- MILB.com has their weekly wrap posted.
- Hank Conger was named Offensive Player of the Week for his grand slam last week:
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have to be happy with their first-round selection (25th overall) in last year's draft. Conger blasted a grand slam, while driving in a career-high five runs in a 12-7 win over Peoria last Wednesday. The 2000 Little League World Series star has 18 RBIs in his last 14 games, and he led the Midwest League this past week in both slugging percentage and hits. On the season, Conger is batting .278 (47-for-169) with 13 doubles, eight home runs and a team-high 31 RBIs.
No Dodger prospect was so named. Pitcher of the Week honors went to Arkansas's Amalio Diaz, Anthony Ortega from Rancho Cucamonga, and Clayton Kershaw at Great Lakes. - Kershaw also made this week's Prospect Hot Sheet
at Baseball America:
We've been getting emails asking if Kershaw is hurt. Hello . . . the Dodgers' first-round pick last year has struck out six or more since Opening Day in the Looneybin and has whiffed 74 in 55 innings overall. Hitters are batting just. 178 against him and he's allowed just one home run in his first full season. Signs point to no on the injury bug so far this season for the 19-year-old lefthander.
Anthony Ortega, already cited above as a pitcher of the week, made the Helium list:The 21-year-old Venezuelan walked eight over his last 14 innings, but also was scoreless through eight of those frames against Inland Empire on May 29. Overall, Ortega is 4-4, 3.01 in 70 innings for the Quakes.

Former Rice star Phil Humber held the Bees down to three earned runs over 6.2 innings on seven hits. Kendry Morales had his first multi-hit game since returning to the Salt Lake roster. Pedro Liriano took hs seventh straight loss despite not pitching terribly.
Statia: 2-4, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Izturis: 3-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Johnson: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI

Toussaint: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Marek: (W, 4-3), 7.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 11 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 3.97 ERA
O'Day: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 0.93 ERA
A four, a three, and a five, and this game was over. Lake Elsinore starter Brenton Carter took all the abuse himself, twelve runs, eleven earned, over three innings. Ben Johnson led the scoring with four RBIs, two on a home run and two on a double. Centerfielder Bradley Coon has had three multi-hit nights over the last week, and is hitting .355/.412/.613 over that span.
Stephen Marek got the win despite a less-than-impressive outing. Darren O'Day once again tossed a scoreless frame, bringing his ERA to an otherworldly 0.93. I've added him to my watchlist.
Nieves: 3-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI
Pettit: 2-3, 1 2B, 3 RBI
Trumbo: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Conger: 2-4, 1 RBI
Phillips: 2-4, 1 K
Holler: (W, 1-3), 5.0 IP, 6 R, 3 ER, 7 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 4.32 ERA
A seven-inning doubleheader game. After two straight 0-fer games, Hank Conger came back with two hits and an RBI. Mark Trumbo, Ryan Mount, Abel Nieves, and P.J. Phillips each had multi-hit nights, with Nieves driving in three. Former Loyola Marymount player centerfielder Chris Pettit also went 2-4. He continues to exhibit good power and batting eye, striking out about twice as often as he walks, not terrible for this level, though you would like to see that go down. Nonetheless, a .367/.444/.601 line is hardly anything to complain about, and if he can keep anything like this going, he's another candidate to add to the watch list.
Nieves: 2-3, 1 BB
Pettit: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Trumbo: 1-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Conger: 0-2, 1 BB
Sweeney: 2-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Veras: 3.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 3.00 ERA
Browning: (W, 3-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.25 ERA
Cook: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 0.53 ERA
Cedar Rapids made it clear they weren't done slugging, storming out of the gate with five runs in the first that settled the matter immediately.
Vladimir Veras made his first appearance and his first start of the year; last season in the Arizona League, he got some eyes popping with a 58/13 K/BB ratio, a 1.35 ERA, and an 8-2 record. There was clearly some rust on display here, as he walked as many as he struck out. Barrett Browning got the win in relief. Aaron Cook pitched the final six outs of the game, doing his usual scoreless dance around several hits. Cook has only issued one walk this season, but he's given up 15 hits in 17 innings. The pains of being a strike-thrower, I guess.
Garcia: 3-6, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Kemp: 3-6, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Jones, M: 3-6, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 2 K
Young: 4-5, 1 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI
LaRoche: 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Freeman: 4-5, 1 2B, 3 RBI
Barnes: 1-1, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Lundberg: (W, 3-4), 6.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 8 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 6.63 ERA
Miller: 0.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 7.85 ERA
Hoorelbeke: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 5.50 ERA
What a fabulous game for Delwyn Young, who slammed a pair of homers to lead the 51's to a 14-7 rout of the Redbirds. Young had four hits total, as did Choo Freeman, part of a season-high 21 hits for the 51's. Those included homers from Sergio Garcia and Larry Barnes.
Spike Lundberg put in his best performance of the season, a quality start that earned him his first win since May 10, and only his third of the year.
Paul: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Dunlap: 2-4, 1 RBI
Ellis: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Ruan: 2-3, 1 3B
Rohan: 2-3, 2 RBI
Norrito: 5.0 IP, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 2.43 ERA
Wright: (W, 3-2) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 4.09 ERA
Meloan: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 2.57 ERA
Jimmy Rohan's 2-for-3, 2 RBI game sparked the Suns' victory. Wesley Wright got the win in relief, as starter Giuseppe Norrito only went five and was unable to get a decision in his fourth season start. Johnathan Meloan earned his ninth save of the season.
Dewitt: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI
