Scores
Mathis: 0-4, 1 K
Evans: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Morales: 0-4
Gorneault: 2-4, 2 K
Olenberger: 3.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 2 HR, 3.11 ERA
Shell: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 3.1 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 4.35 ERA
The first half of a doubleheader rescheduled due to rain on May 2, in which the Beavers won both ends. Portland starting outfielder Jack Cust was no longer available, thanks to his trade to Oakland, and Nathan Haynes has since been translated to the Angels, where he is effectively keeping a bench seat warm. Steven Shell filled in for Kasey Olenberger, who started the second half of the doubleheader, and took the loss after giving up four runs, all earned. The game was played to a nine innings, as it had been suspended at the end of the fourth inning.
Wood: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Morales: 1-3
Evans: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Gorneault: 1-3, 1 K
Liriano: (L, 1-8), 4.1 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 5.81 ERA
Terry Evans drove in two of the Bees' three runs in this seven-inning doubleheader. His two-run jack in the fifth was his tenth homer of the year. Pedro Liriano took the loss, his sixth straight loss in starts in which he has had a decision.
Porter: 1-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Wilson: 3-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Collins: 1-5, 2 K
Peel, A: 1-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Rodriguez, R: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 5.88 ERA
Beck: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Edwards: (S, 3), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 3.62 ERA
The Drillers drilled Amalio Diaz hard in the first, with Diaz uncorking two wild pitches (Corey Wimberley struck out and reached), two doubles, a homer, and two singles for five runs total; he gave up two more for seven runs, all earned, over five innings. Thanks to the Travs' offense, he only received a dent to his ERA and a no-decision as Sean Rodriguez, Bobby Wilson, and Aaron Peel all had solid nights at the plate, with Wilson and Peel both homering. Utilityman Ryan Leahy, starting at third, drove in the winning run on an RBI single in the top of the 10th. Bill Edwards collected his third save of the year despite giving up a hit and a walk.
Sutton: 2-3, 2 RBI
Marek: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 4.10 ERA
Stertzbach: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 8.64 ERA
Arredondo: 0.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 27.00 ERA
O'Day: (S, 11), 0.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 0.75 ERA
Starter Steve Marek left the game in the third without making an out after taking a line drive off his hand. Von Stertzbach covered for him through three innings and got the win in relief, and from there it was a relay race to the finish. In particular, Kevin Jepsen's work was outstanding, facing the minimum in two of his three innings.
Jose Arredondo, demoted for his June 6 mound tantrum at Arkansas, came in for the ninth and gave up consecutive singles, loading the bases on a grounder Hainley Statia could do nothing with. A passed ball to catcher Flint Wipke scored one run, spoiling the Quakes' shutout. Another Maverick scored three batters later when Arredondo uncorked a wild pitch. He re-loaded the bases by walking Casey Craig, at which point Darren O'Day was brought in to restore order. With two out, he gave up a long scary fly ball that right fielder Anderson Rosario caught at the wall to end the game.
Nate Sutton's fifth inning, bases-loaded single plated two and capped the Quakes' scoring. I have read recently — and I'll have to do some digging to re-find the page — but supposedly the Red Sox are already regretting their affiliation with High Desert, as it's such a launching pad that their best pitching prospects are bypassing the Cal League. If I can get an attribution on that, I'll present it, but this is definitely consistent with their string of short-term affiliations, none lasting more than four years, since 1991. (They were a Royals affiliate for only two years before they changed to the Sox last year.)
Pettit: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Trumbo: 1-4, 1 K
Conger: 1-4, 2 K
Sweeney: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Phillips: 0-4, 2 K
Veras: (L, 0-2), 3.0 IP, 8 R, 8 ER, 8 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 8.18 ERA
Vladimir Veras was terrible, taking a drubbing in a game that saw Wisconsin DH Carlos Peguero drive in a career-high seven runs, including two home runs. Christoper Pettit and Matt Sweeney both homered in the loss, which eliminated Cedar Rapids from the first-half postseason. Also of interest: Aaron Cook gave up his third earned run of the year while striking out three over four innings.
Maza: 2-3
Martinez: 2-3
Lundberg: 6.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 8 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 6.75 ERA
Riley: (L, 1-1) (in relief), 0.1 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 7.58 ERA
Jorge Piedra's walkoff seventh-inning two-run homer off Matt Riley ended this doubleheader. Spike Lundberg posted a quality start, and Delwyn Young had a two-out solo homer in the first; maybe he was swinging for the fences in his other three times up, explaining his silver sombrero.
Barnes: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Lindsey: 2-3, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Huckaby: 2-4, 2 RBI
Eckert: 3.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 7 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 7.45 ERA
Hoorelbeke: (W, 2-3) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 5.40 ERA
White: (S, 2), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 4.20 ERA
The 51's split the series thanks to three homers off the bats of Larry Barnes and John Lindsey. Lindsey collected his second multi-homer game of the year, and his first with Las Vegas; he drove in four runs on his two longballs, hit as a DH. (DH? Wait, aren't the Dodgers in the National League?)
Casey Hoorelbeke got the win in relief as Harold Eckert only went three innings in an emergency start, his first of the year.
Hu, C: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB
Dunlap: 0-4, 1 K
McDougall: 3-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Raglani: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Gonzalez, J: 3-5, 1 RBI
Ellis: 2-4, 1 RBI
Megrew: (W, 4-5), 5.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 6.24 ERA
Alexander: 2.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 5.04 ERA
The Suns got a great offensive performance from Marshall McDougall, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, as Jacksonville cruised to a 7-1 win over Montgomery. Mark Alexander posted his third consecutive game with scoreless frames. Mike Megrew went five and a third innings with only one run; former Dirtbag Evan Longoria swiped second off Megrew in the first.
Dewitt: 2-5
Mitchell: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Hoffmann: 2-4
De Jesus: 1-3, 1 RBI
Arias, M: (W, 5-1), 5.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 4 BB, 5.74 ERA
Wade: (S, 5), 3.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 2.11 ERA
Perez: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Bell: 1-4, 2 K
Mattingly: 2-4, 2 RBI
Van Slyke: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K
Santana: 0-4
Robinson: 2-4, 1 K
Castillo: (W, 2-3), 7.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 6 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 4.87 ERA
Scott Van Slyke's first inning homer capped a four-run first that provided the win for the Loons. Arismendy Castillo got his second win of the season by pitching seven innings of one-run ball.
