Monkeytown: Angels 3, Dodgers 0

As promised, this turned out to be another pitcher's duel, but this time the Dodgers came up on the wrong side of a big three-run inning after it became obvious that Jason Schmidt was tiring. Both sides loaded the bases up (the Angels in the third with two outs on an intentional walk to Vlad, the Dodgers in the second with two outs on an unintentional walk to Andre Ethier) but failed to score. Jered Weaver's start featured four walks, none intentional, a consequence of throwing 55 strikes and 40 balls, yet he managed to keep the shutout through five and two thirds innings.

The same could not be said about Schmidt, who gave up four walks, five hits, and three runs. His performance and health are still open questions, and the Dodgers have to be frustrated to see him performing so poorly this short into a three-year deal.

Garret Anderson left the game in the first after he injured himself fielding Juan Pierre's fly to left. It turned out to be a critical play, because his replacement, Reggie Willits, came up big with a two-run bases-loaded single in the fifth. Anderson is listed day-to-day, which presumably means he won't be in tomorrow's game — as will Casey Kotchman, who accidently got clocked in the dome by Russell Martin's throw while trying to return to second base following his two-out double in the 7th. Kotchman lay on the ground for several minutes, and walked off the field assisted by the coaching staff. Vlad Guerrero was also hit by a Jason Schmidt pitch on the forearm near the wrist in the fifth.

A couple Angels milestones occurred during the last couple of games; first, in yesterday's contest, Francisco Rodriguez passed Bryan Harvey on the all-time saves list. Second, Scot Shields surpassed Andy Messersmith for the Angels' franchise all-time ERA list for pitchers with 500 or more innings pitched.
