Minor League Scorebook

News

The Anteaters seem to have a thing for extras, because they beat Arizona State in the 10th yesterday on a walkoff RBI single with the bases loaded, the third game in a row in which UC Irvine won in extras in the last at-bat. "The 2007 UC Irvine Anteaters don't want to take their uniforms off," said coach Dave Serrano. UCI came back from a four-run deficit to get the job done, a rally started — and interrupted — in a most unusual fashion (emphasis mine):
It started with back-to-back pinch-hit walks by Dillon Bell and Zach Robinson, followed by another walk to Taylor Holiday. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jarvis hit Ben Orloff to make it 7-4. The next batter, Cipriano, singled up the middle to cut the deficit to two runs. Then Matt Morris tied it up with a double to right-center field. The Anteaters might have taken the lead on that play, but Cipriano was held up at third base, and he grabbed third-base coach Greg Bergeron to stop himself. By rule, Cipriano was called out, and Arizona State got out of the inning with a double play.
UCI has to face a rested Oregon State over the next two days. Zot!

Mike Eylward also homered, a two-run jack in the fourth. Morales is in the middle of a hitting streak of his own, an 11-game streak dating back to June 3, with a .381/.409/.452 mark.

Yesterday marked the beginning of short-season league play, in particular, the Pioneer League; the AZL will start its season on Friday, June 22.

Grodon Gronkowski's 3-for-4 with a double and a walk was the offensive highlight of this loss; the Owlz worked back from a 4-0 deficit and even scored the third run in the ninth on a two-out rally that saw four consecutive singles, the last one an infield hit to shortstop Justin Fuller by Anel De Los Santos, a promotee from last year's AZL crop.
