Pickoff Moves, Lunchtime Edition

Rangers Re-Up GM Daniels

Damned if I know why they signed him to a one-year deal with the team currently sporting the worst record in baseball. On the other hand, given the turmoil that club faces, it's not much of a surprise they aren't doing well. Some of that clearly stemmed from very bad choices on which Daniels signed off. The Adam Eaton for Chris Young trade in particular was about as bad as you could imagine, amplified by Eaton's near-instantaneous injury after the trade, and then there was the Danks-for-McCarthy, which has been an unmitigated disaster. (Update: You could conceivably add not re-signing Gary Matthews, Jr. to that list, but since I was opposed to the deal at the time, I won't go there.) The Rangers' chronic inability to get decent pitching and keep it healthy is part and parcel of that awful hitter's park, compounded this year by a mediocre offense that's sixth in the league in runs scored. Adam J. Morris at Lone Star Ball speculates that one factor driving this deal is that other GMs could have a better bargaining position knowing Daniels is managing for his job.

Rangers, Yanks Flirting With Teixeira/Hughes Deal?

Ken Rosenthal seems to think that there might be a Mark Teixeira-for-Phil Hughes deal; the Yanks have been scouting Eric Gagne and Akinora Otsuka as well. This would be ideal for two reasons: first, the Rangers just traded away their best pitching prospect, and second, the Yanks need a first baseman. No, the real reason I like this deal is that by sucking the Yanks' best pitching prospect, it proves they don't have the mettle to build from within. Considering the incredible amounts of money the Yanks will soon have to throw at free agents thanks to the new Yankee Stadium, they'll need every handicap that can be thrown at them.
