Pickoff Moves
Roster Notes
- The Yankees are talking to the Angels about a Shea Hillenbrand trade. The sooner the better for all parties.
- Casey Kotchman is expected to miss another 2-3 games with side effects of his concussion, a grade I (the mildest type). That Russell Martin has one heck of an arm.
- Garret Anderson will miss at least two weeks with his re-injury suffered on Saturday.
- Former Angel Brendan Donnelly, now of the Red Sox, has hit the 15-day DL with a strained right forearm. It's not a strained ERA, as Donnelly hasn't allowed an earned run since May 23.
- Mike Piazza will get to catch after all, working some behind the dish after he returns from his DL stint.
Orioles Fire Manager, Shake Up Front Office
The Baltimore Orioles have fired manager Sam Perlozzo, according to a story in the Chicago Tribune. The Baltimore Sun reports that bench coach Dave Trembley is expected to be the interim manager. In a front-office shakeup, Buster Olney reports that former Cubs executive Andy MacPhail will take over as COO.

So who DHs now? Haynes/Quinlan? If so, you've now got hitters with no chance of power at DH, 3B & LF against right-hand pitching. And against lefties, you've got Casey Kotchman flailing.
Shea Hillenbrand:
Season: .246/.269/.324
vs. LHP: .250/.275/.333
Last 28 days: .271/.314/.438
Reggie Willits:
Season: .329/.433/.387
vs. LHP: .400/.483/.440
Chone Figgins:
Season: .258/.305/.325
Last 28 days: .357/.400/.439
vs. LHP: .237/.275/.342
Career vs. LHP: .292/.345/.401
Garret Anderson:
Season: .275/.312/.422
vs. LHP: .323/.313/.452
Anderson is raking lefties this year, which is weird for him, because last year we were bagging on him for his failure to do just that. But my point is, Matt, that it's not clear that Hillenbrand has either a place on the team or much justification hitting ahead of someone like Willits, who is hitting lefties harder (albeit barely) than Hillenbrand. I totally agree with you that the Angels' big deficiency is the absence of a power bat at all the positions you mention; it's just that Hillenbrand isn't making the case for him to be that player.

I'll take Q at DH vs LHP, and Haynes vs RHP at this point. Sure, the latter is an unproven quantity. But he maintained a .651 SLG vs righties at Salt Lake, and hasn't looked completely overmatched at the plate so far. At least he's only K'ed once in his 10 ABs.
And better yet, if Haynes can play RF with Vlad at DH, you have perhaps the rangiest OF in the game with Willits and GMJ out there.

Uh, Reggie's the left-fielder, Figgins is the third baseman, and Anderson's hurt. So again, Rob, who should DH?
And Andrew, that might be the best answer until Rivera comes back, but the effective platoon (compared to what we run now) would be Kotchman against lefties & Haynes against righties. Which could be very weak, even if it's probably a good idea to acclimate Kotch to LHP one of these months....
