Tech: The Fustercluck Of xmradio.com

With both dogs needing to go to the vet during times of the day when the Cubs are playing their home games, I thought I'd get Helen an XM radio so she could listen to the games while waiting for the radiation treatments to end. But the whole process of registering the radio and operating it has turned into a total joke.

Because there's a $5 discount for registering online, she did that yesterday, electing to buy two years' worth of service in advance. We followed the instructions for registration — but hours later, it still couldn't receive anything besides the demo channel.

We went to xmradio.com's customer care pages, and discovered that they had forgotten Helen's userid and password. Not only that, but when we tried to get that e-mailed back to her, we got an unfriendly "page not found" error. Okay, time to call the customer service phone number.

The voice-recognition robot actually got me to the right place. I got to "Welcome to XM Radio, this is fejwklhg <click>".

"If you would like to make a call, please hang up..."

Brilliant. So I tried that again, and this time I got a hold of somebody who actually was able to answer my questions, and she was able to get my radio working... but only after trying to upsell me, twice, to longer plans and an extra radio. Guys, one thing at a time, first, please.

sweet. that's progress for you... does not bode well for XM stockholders, albeit just a slice of their business.

Their website is just massively screwed up ... it is NOT a selling opportunity when you talk to a customer who still has no evidence that his prior purchase is working out.
