You Are On The Way To Destruction: Padres 5, Dodgers 2

Loaded for Wolf

A veritable cornucopia of hit came off Juan Pierre's bat in this one; I figured surely he'd go 0-5 in this game with a pair of strikeouts. Apparently, I failed to take into consideration the fact that the Padres would make sure he never got the opportunity to have five at-bats. Jeff Kent's 3-4 explosion notwithstanding, the Dodgers didn't really have a chance in this game, and arguably this series. The Bums' 3-4-5 starters, some of whom were unknown before the series started, got pitted against the Padres' 1-2-3 rotation mates. That unfortunately led to some serious mismatches, as the Dodgers' offense just isn't enough to make up for that kind of disparity, not even against an aging Greg Maddux. Maybe they'll have better luck later in the season, when he's had a chance to get fatigued... except that over the last three years, he's actually gotten better post-All-Star-Break.

Randy Wolf wasn't much for this game, and while Tomko and Hendrickson held up thereafter, there's no mistaking that things are a bit more wobbly than you might like. Kevin Kouzmanoff, Hiram Freaking Bocachica, and Geoff Blum all had two hits apiece, Bocachica a pair of doubles. From those watching the game, it sounded like Wolf left Bocachica's pitches on a tee. Time to regroup.

Update: And yes, Trevor Hoffman got to 500 saves against the Dodgers. It truthfully slipped my mind because it was late, but that's no small feat. On the one hand, I extend him my sincerest congratulations; on the other, the team that gave him the opportunity reminds me far too much of the late 90's Dodgers: underachieving, overpaid, and too full of stinky veterans to be anything better than mediocre — which the third-place (a game and a half back of first-place San Diego) Dodgers now are.
