Scores
Wood: 1-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K
Eylward: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Mathis: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Shell: (BS, 3)(L, 4-2) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 5.56 ERA
It's Near Miss Day throughout the Angels' upper minors, and we'll start with this game, which began mighty promisingly with a five-run first for the Bees. Brandon Wood homered to drive in the first three in the frame; but Salt Lake starter Henry Bonilla subsequently imploded, as did Steven Shell, who took the loss and a blown save. The Bees mounted an eighth inning rally that scored a run and could have scored more, but Mike Eylward was called out at home on Jeff Mathis' RBI double, and Mathis himself got called out trying to score on Ryan Budde's fielder's choice in the next at bat.
Rodriguez, S: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 K
Wilson: 0-4, 1 K
Collins: 1-3, 1 BB
Smith, Co: 2-3, 1 2B
Green: 5.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 8 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 3 HR, 4.64 ERA
Saenz: (L, 1-6) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 7.68 ERA
Nick Green's troubles continued, as he hasn't posted a win since June 6, and only two quality starts in June. Vasili Spanos went yard twice off Green for a total of three runs, and once more besides off Chris Saenz, who took the loss.
Anderson: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 K
Johnson: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Pettit: 3-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Toussaint: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Statia: 1-4, 2 K
Speier: (H, 1), 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 3.86 ERA
Arredondo: (BS, 1)(L, 0-1) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 17.47 ERA
Rancho put up a two-spot in the first on Ben Johnson's two-run jack, but Inland Empire got that back in the third on Blake DeWitt's bases-clearing, two-out triple off Quakes starter Bobby Mosebach.
In the fifth, Rancho sent nine men to the plate and scored five times, one off an RBI single by DH Garret Anderson, and three from Christopher Pettit's homer, his first of the year.
The 66ers got four of those runs back in a mostly two-out rally in the sixth that finally chased Mosebach, and got Justin Speier on the mound for the last out.
With the game at 8-6 going into the ninth, the 66ers mounted their final surge after Jose Arredondo was called on to protect the lead. Instead, he gave up consecutive singles to Bridger Hunt and Travis Denker, and Blake DeWitt blasted one over the right field fence to give Inland Empire the lead for good.
Brewer: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 RBI
Sweeney: 2-4, 1 RBI, 2 K
Trumbo: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Walker: 2-3, 1 RBI
Rosario: 1-2, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Bell: (W, 3-2), 7.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 7 K, 2 BB, 3.83 ERA
Browning: (S, 6), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 3.27 ERA
I had to remind myself, looking at Tadd Brewer's line, that he's been freshly demoted from Rancho, where he wasn't doing all that well. Anderson Rosario homered, a two-run jack in the third; Mark Trumbo walked, an event that's of late not as surprising as you might think, since he's done it in seven games out of his last 11, during which time he has an on-base streak (dating back to June 17).
Trevor Bell picked up his fourth quality start of the month, with seven strikeouts, six hits, and two walks. Barrett Browning got the save with a clean ninth.
Brossman: 3-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Gronkowski: 3-5, 2 2B, 4 RBI
Kiniry: 3-4, 1 2B
Veras: (W, 2-0), 6.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.80 ERA
Hurst: (S, 1), 3.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.35 ERA
Vladimir Veras got his second Pioneer League win of the year (and his second quality start) despite not being particularly dominant (only three K's over six innings); you may remember he got booted down from the Midwest League earlier in the year after he made three starts and never got into the sixth in any of them.
Gordon Gronkowski continued his one-man hitting show, hitting .490/.519/.686 for Orem. He has more multi-hit games at this level (8) than 0-fers (1), and I smell a promotion after another month of this — if he has to wait that long.
Gordon: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB
Molina, R: 5.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 3.38 ERA
Austen: (BS, 1)(L, 0-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 6.00 ERA
Robin Molina pitched five scoreless innings, but David Austin spoiled it by giving up the go-ahead run in the seventh. The Angels actually outhit the Mariners 7-5, but couldn't string them together.
LaRoche: 2-3, 1 3B, 1 BB
Freeman: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Hoorelbeke: 0-2, 2 K
Eckert: (L, 0-1), 2.0 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 8 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 5.66 ERA
Hoorelbeke: 3.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 5.07 ERA
Fresno jumped on emergency starter Harold Eckert in the third; he loaded the bases and gave up a two-run single to rehabbing Rich Aurilia, and then Casey Hoorelbeke came in and allowed two more to cross the plate as unearned runs, thanks to an Andy LaRoche fielding error.
Choo Freeman homered in the loss.
Hu, C: 0-4, 1 K
Gonzalez, J: 2-4
Dunlap: 0-1
Cyr: (L, 6-3), 5.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 8 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 3.18 ERA
LaMura: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 3.57 ERA
Akin: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 4.69 ERA
Eric Cyr took his second straight loss in this one, compounded by B.J. LaMura's mediocre showing in relief; it was LaMura's second appearance at this level this year after being demoted following his catastrophic June 22 start for Las Vegas. Xavier Paul drove in both Jacksonville runs on a two-run single.
Dewitt: 2-5, 1 3B, 1 HR, 5 RBI
Hoffmann: 3-4, 1 BB
De Jesus: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Rogowski: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
White, C: 4.2 IP, 8 R, 8 ER, 9 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 15.43 ERA
Alvarez: (W, 3-4) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 5.21 ERA
Wilson: (S, 8), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 0.41 ERA
Santana: 1-2, 2 BB
Mattingly: 0-4, 4 K
Castillo: (L, 2-5), 5.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 4 BB, 5.30 ERA
Both starters left this game with ERAs over 5.00, so it was a shock to see the score as low as it was. Scott Van Slyke made an outfield assist in the top of the fifth to nab Travis Snider at home plate and limit the damage to only a one-run deficit. Preston Mattingly got a golden sombrero, the second time in his career he's worn that hat.
Brown: 0-2, 3 BB, 2 K
Vetters: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Brooks, D: (W, 1-1), 5.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 9 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 4.80 ERA
Quintana: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 5.40 ERA
Brannon: 1.2 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 2.45 ERA
Caraballo: (S, 2), 0.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 2.70 ERA
Jaime Pedroza went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and Casper helped out with six errors that turned into three unearned runs.
Baez: 2-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K
Lambo: 2-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Erickson: 2-3, 1 BB
Dutton: 5.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 4.05 ERA
Garcia, L. A.: (BS, 1), 3.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 3.52 ERA
Perez, E: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Andrew Lambo won this game on his ninth-inning walkoff sac fly, and hit a solo homer besides. Pedro Baez also homered in a game that featured a rehab appearance by Lastings Milledge.
