Minor League Scorebook
News
- Minor League Scorebook makes its triumphant return, finally powered by MILB.com's XML feed. A big thank you goes to Joseph Adler's Baseball Hacks, which gave me both the inspiration and starting points to finally get off my rear end and convert from parsing JavaScript output to XML. There may still be a few bugs here and there in the code, particularly in the handling of rescheduled games, suspended games, and especially rescheduled games where the rescheduling results in both teams playing in each other's stadiums on the same day. (It has happened!)
- A bunch of transactions have occurred over the last week, so my apologies for getting to so many of these late.... as always, I am indebted to whoever runs the Arkansas Travelers' website, because he does such a great job keeping up on these things. Brok Butcher has advanced to AA Arkansas, and Brad Beck has moved back to the bullpen. Struggling RHP Chris Saenz was released, and starter RHP Jesse Smith was placed on the DL. Smith will start a rehab program on Monday while the team visits Wichita.
- Ben Johnson was demoted to Rancho after his brief stint in the Texas League; Aussie RHP reliever Rich Thompson was promoted to Salt Lake.
- RHP Miguel Gonzalez was named Travs' player of the month for June. Gonzalez went on to pitch a three-hit complete game on Monday to continue his recent dominance on the mound.
- Tadd Brewer was promoted to Rancho effective July 7; Marco Albano came off the DL to make room.
- The Bees disabled Curtis Pride July 5; at the same time, Tommy Murphy was activated.
Scores

Gorneault: 2-4, 1 K
Rouwenhorst: (L, 9-4), 5.0 IP, 7 R, 7 ER, 12 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 2 HR, 4.88 ERA
Cashman Field became Homer City in this one, with six homers between the two sides, five from Las Vegas, who just pounded Bees pitching. Marshall McDougall picked up his first AAA homer this year; Greg Porter's dinger was the only one for the Bees. Chin-Lung Hu, John Lindsey, and Delwyn Young also homered for the 51's. Reliever Steven Shell gave up three all by himself in two innings of work.
Morrissey: 3-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K
Rodriguez, S: 1-4, 1 K
Pali: 3-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K
Collins: 0-4
Rodriguez, F: (W, 5-1), 6.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 3.45 ERA
Rodriguez, R: (H, 3), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 5.61 ERA
Adam Morrissey homered twice in this 8-3 blowout, a game that also saw Brad Coon with his second multi-hit game for Arkansas. (Coon has been with the Travs since June 28, and is hitting .280/.419/.417 with eight home runs with Arkansas (going into Saturday's game) as the team's starting centerfielder.
Pettit: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 BB
Remole: 2-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Larue: 2-4, 1 RBI, 2 K
McRobbie: 3.2 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 6 H, 1 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 12.27 ERA
Arredondo: (L, 0-2) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 12.75 ERA
UC Santa Barbara product Alex McRobbie — apparently a 24th-round pick by the Blue Jays in the 2005 draft — made his first start and his first appearance in the Angels' system in this game, going 3.2 innings and giving up six runs, five earned, including a two-out, two-run homer to Lancaster's Brad Correll. The Quakes caught up in the sixth with four runs to tie the game at six apiece, but Jose Arredondo lost focus once again and gave up three to lose it.
Sweeney: 2-4, 1 3B, 3 RBI
Trumbo: 0-3, 1 RBI
Bell: 4.0 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 7 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 4.45 ERA
Shearer: 2.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 0.93 ERA
Arredondo: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 3.79 ERA
Trevor Bell posted his second terrible start in his last five starts, getting the boot after only four innings. It took some work on Fort Wayne's part, because the Kernels roared out to a 5-0 lead after a tumultuous first inning that saw Matt Sweeney triple and Mark Trumbo — of all players — steal second and scoring a run on Brian Walker's RBI double.
Walker seems to be having a much better time of things in the Midwest League than he did in the Pioneer League; the former Razorback catcher, a 29th-round pick this year, is hitting well so far in limited action (.303/.340/.390 in 33 AB).
Once again, an Arredondo lost the game, this time Felipe, who gave up three runs on two doubles, a wild pitch, and an intentional pass. Lefty reliever Kelly Shearer's impressive 0.93 ERA needs to be taken with some grains of salt; as a 22-year-old, he needs to be dominating here. This was his fourth Midwest League appearance this year for the former prep pitcher, taken in the 14th round of the 2003 draft.
Estrella: 3-5, 2 RBI, 1 K
Brossman: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Fish: (L, 1-1), 4.2 IP, 5 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 4 K, 4 BB, 1 HR, 4.24 ERA
Young: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Lindsey: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
LaRoche: 3-3, 2 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI
McDougall: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Pinango: (W, 5-4), 6.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 7 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 4.00 ERA
Howard, K: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Dewitt: 1-3
Dunlap: 0-3
Megrew: (L, 6-6), 6.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 5.63 ERA
Mike Megrew posted a quality start but got tagged with the tough-luck loss, as his offense was three-hit by the Barons' Ryan Wing, a product of Riverside City College, and two relievers. Reliever Cory Wade made his first appearance (apparently promoted after infrequent use at Inland Empire) and pitched three scoreless innings to keep the Suns in it.
Hoffmann: 2-4, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
May: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
De Jesus: 1-4, 2 K
Alvarez, M: (W, 4-5), 5.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 4.87 ERA
Pratt: 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 6.00 ERA
Wilson: (S, 11), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 0.35 ERA
The 66ers faced rehabbing major league reliever Jonathan Sanchez, who promptly struck out the side to start the game. But once he left the game, it was Inland Empire's turn to dominate the game, starting with a three-run fourth that included a Lucas May two-run jack. Former Bruin Kyle Wilson closed the game, dancing around a pair of hits.
Bell: 1-2, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 3 BB
Peterson: 2-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Santana: 0-5
Apodaca: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Kershaw: 5.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 6 H, 8 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 2.55 ERA
Jones: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 5.60 ERA
Malone: 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 2.84 ERA
Sanfler: (L, 2-3) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 5.29 ERA
Three solo homers — one each from Joshua Bell, James Peterson, and Juan Apodaca — weren't enough to lift the Loons past the Bees, as Miguel Sanfler took his third loss, this time in extras.
Stanke: (L, 0-3), 4.1 IP, 8 R, 5 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 4 BB, 1 HR, 7.20 ERA
Caraballo: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 4.70 ERA
Garcia, Y: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Smit: 5.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 8 K, 1 BB, 3.86 ERA
Gomez, J: (BS, 1)(L, 0-1) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 6 R, 4 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 6 BB, 18.00 ERA
A real meltdown by Venezuelan Jesus Gomez, but you expect those at this level; he gave up six runs, four earned, in the eighth to earn a blown save.
