Accentuate The Positive: Angels 2, Rangers 1

It'd be a little facile to observe that the Angels aren't hitting at the top of the order (again) but since June 17 opposition pitcher Kevin Millwood has sported a .244/.311/.350 line with a 3.66 ERA, which, I suppose, is partly to blame. Nonetheless I confess to not a little frustration watching as Izturis led off three separate innings and failed to get on base even once; apparently, Howie Kendrick hit the DL before the game with a fractured finger, something I missed in the radio broadcast beforehand. (Brandon Wood got the callup from Salt Lake, so we may assume Chone Figgins will see some time at second.)

The game moved pretty smoothly through the first seven, with Kelvim Escobar matching (and ultimately besting) Millwood, but once things proceeded to the relievers, it slowed to a crawl. Luckily, we were spared extra innings by Casey Kotchman coming through with a walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth to follow up Gary Matthews, Jr.'s leadoff double, and thus the Angels advance to 54-35; with Boston's 6-5 loss to Toronto, it ties them for best record in the majors, and thanks to a 6-3 win by Detroit over Seattle, the Angels get a little breathing room from a suddenly scary Mariners team.

Update: Via BTF, a Dallas Morning News story about Mark Teixeira's return possibly killing Sammy Sosa's future playing time. Sosa has had a terrible July (.111/.111/.111 with no extra-base hits and no RBIs). If his slumping continues, he's likely to find himself back of the depth chart behind 27-year-old Jason Botts, hitting .320/.430/.560 for AAA Oklahoma.

Here's to hoping that four day's worth of Tiger Soup is just what the doctor ordered for the Drunken Sailors. May the Seattle Slide begin here and now!
